The Emory men’s and women’s cross country
teams competed at the 27th Annual University Athletic
Association Championships on Saturday. The meet was held at
Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Penn., and hosted by Carnegie Mellon
University.
The men’s side posted a fifth-place finish, registering 142
points. Taking home the top spot for the fourth straight year
was No. 2-ranked Washington University with 26 points. No. 7
New York University claimed runner-up honors with 49 points while
the University of Chicago was third with 81 points. Leading
the Eagles’ contingent for the second straight race and third
time this season was senior Alex Fleischhacker who covered the 8k
course in a time of 26:11.4, good for 21st place in the
75-runner field. Freshman Michael McBane was the next team
member to cross the finish line, clocking a 26:12.4 that placed him
23rd overall. Senior Eddie Mulder (26:37.5)
and junior Patrick Crews (26:38) finished 32nd and
33rd, respectively, while freshman Michael Sisario
rounded out the team’s scorers (26:52, 45th).
The women’s squad came in seventh, recording 162
points. No. 9-ranked Chicago defended its crown, totaling 54
points that edged No. 8 NYU’s effort of 60 points.
Brandeis checked in at third (88 pts.) while Washington University
was fourth with 92 points. Junior Tamara Surtees was the
team’s leading performer for the fifth time this season,
posting a 6K time of 22:46.3 that was good for 14th
position out of 79 entries. Surtees’ showing allowed
her to earn Second Team All-UAA acclaim for the second straight
year. Senior Emily Caesar was 16th overall with a
time of 22:51 while junior Elise Viox was the next Emory runner to
appear on the final score sheet with an effort of 23:49, good for
43rd place. Rounding out the team’s scorers
were junior Marissa Gogniat (24:00.3) and sophomore Ashley Stumvoll
(24:01.0)
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Nov. 16, when they
venture to Newport News, Virginia, to compete at the NCAA Regional
Championships.
