The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams head
into the homestretch of the season on Saturday (Nov. 15) when they
compete at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships.
This year's competitions will be held at the Clara Bowl Course at
Berry College. The men's 8K race begins at 9:30 am, followed
by the women's 6K at 11:00 am.
There are eight regional championships being conducted around the
country with the top two men's and women's teams from each regional
earning automatic bids to the NCAA National Championships on
Saturday, Nov. 22, in Mason, Ohio. In addition, there
will be 16 at-large teams selected for both the men's and women's
championships. Approximately 29 men’s and 30
women’s teams, along with a host of individual competitors,
will be taking part in this year’s South/Southeast Regional
competition.
The Emory women's team, ranked 23rd nationally and
first in the region, has enjoyed considerable success at the NCAA
Regionals, logging first-place efforts in 17 of the past 23
seasons. In 2013, the Eagles ventured to Newport News, Va.,
and finished runner-up in a 27-team field with 76 points, trailing
only Trinity University’s top mark of 36 points. The
Eagles saw all five of their scorers earn all-region kudos by
virtue of finishing among the top 35, led by Tamara Surtees who
paced the team while placing sixth overall out of 193
entries.
The Emory’s men’s team, currently the top-ranked
program in the region, posted a second-place effort out of 24
squads a year ago that enabled the Eagles to advance to nationals
for the first time since 2009. Current members of the team,
seniors Tyler Cooke and Alex Fleischhacker, were all-region
performers with the pair finishing 13th and
22nd, respectively, out of 174 runners.
