Emory Women's Cross Country Third, Men Fifth At UAA Championships

Emory Women's Cross Country Third, Men Fifth At UAA Championships

The Emory women’s cross country team turned in a third-place finish and the men recorded a fifth-place performance at the 28th annual University Athletic Association Championships.   The event was held at Forest Park in St. Louis, Mo, and hosted by Washington University.

The 30th-ranked women’s side jumped up four spots from last year’s finish, totaling 106 points.  No. 8-ranked Washington University took home the title with 23 points and was followed by the University of Chicago’s 60 points.  No. 17 Case Western Reserve (117 pts.) and Carnegie Mellon (123 pts.) rounded out the top five.    Senior Tamara Surtees paced the Emory contingent for the fifth straight meet, clocking a personal-best 6K time of 22:02 that placed fifth out of 77 runners.  By virtue of her finish, Surtees captured First Team All-UAA honors, the Eagle to claim that distinction since 2008 (Melissa Jones).  Junior Marissa Gogniat was the squad’s No. 2 runner, registering a 22:45 that ranked 15th in the field.  Freshman Halle Markel was Emory’s No. 3 scorer, crossing the finish line in 26th position at 23:08.  Sophomore Sophie Cemaj (23:13 (personal best), 29th place) and senior Elise Viox (23:21 (personal best), 34th place) rounded out the team’s scorers.  Markel’s outing landed her a spot on the league’s All-Freshman Team.

The men's side totaled 119 points and was led by junior Lukas Mees whose 8K effort of 25:42 represented his second-best time as an Eagle and that ranked 12th out of 78 entries, enabling him to garner Second Team All-UAA kudos.  Senior Tyler Cooke closed out the race at 25:57, good for 22nd place, while sophomore Grant Murphy was close behind with his performance of 25:59.95 slotting him 24th in the field.  Freshman Jordan Flowers (26:03, 26th place) and senior Alex Fleischhacker (26:20, 36th place) accounted for the other Emory points.  Flowers raced his way to a spot on the conference’s All-Freshman Team.  Taking home the team title for the fifth-straight campaign was No. 13 Wash U with 37 points.  No. 31-ranked Carnegie Mellon claimed the runner-up spot (60 pts.) while No. 27 University of Chicago was third with 78 points.

The Eagles return to action on Nov. 15 when they venture to Rome, Georgia to compete in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships.
