Emory Cross Country Teams To Compete At NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships

The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams head into the homestretch of the season on Saturday (Nov. 14) when they compete at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships.  This year's competitions will be held at the Kernstown Battlefield in Winchester, Virginia.  The women's 6K race begins at 11:00 am, followed by the men's 8K at noon.  Serving as the host site is Shenandoah University.

There are eight regional championships being conducted around the country with the top two men's and women's teams from each regional earning automatic bids to the NCAA National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21, in Winneconne,  Wisconsin.  In addition, there will be 16 at-large teams selected for both the men's and women's championships.

The Emory women's team, ranked 27th nationally and first in the region, has enjoyed considerable success at the NCAA Regionals, logging first-place efforts in 18 of the past 24 seasons.  In 2014, the Eagles made the short trip to Rome, Georgia, and topped a 29-team field with 62 points, well ahead of runner-up Christopher Newport’s 124 points.   The Eagles saw all five of their scorers earn all-region kudos by virtue of finishing among the top 35.  This year’s squad has been paced by senior Elise Viox, who has ranked as the squad’s No. 1 runner in all six of its competitions.  In her most recent outing, Viox raced to Second Team All-UAA honors after finishing eighth at the conference championships (Oct. 31).   Earlier this season, Viox clocked a personal-best 6K time of 22:17 at the AAE Invitational.

The Emory’s men’s team, currently the top-ranked program in the region, posted a first-place effort out of 28 squads a year ago, the program’s first region title since 2009.  The Eagles boasted six all-region honorees in 2014 including four current members of the season’s squad – Grant Murphy, Lukas Mees, Jordan Flowers and Austin Hunt.  Mees has been the team’s No. 1 runner in all six meets this fall, and is coming off a personal-best 8K time of 25:02 at the UAA Championships, good for a second-place finish and First Team All-UAA recognition.
