Emory Men's Cross Country Finishes Strong At Louisville Classic & JSU Foothills

The Emory men's cross country program split up its squad on Saturday and recorded solid performances at a pair of meets, competing at the Greater Louisville Classic and the JSU Foothills Invitational in Oxford, Alabama.

At the Louisville Classic, which was held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, the site of the 2016 D-III National Championships, the Eagles finished fifth out of 43 teams with 134 points.  Taking home the top spot was No. 2 North Central with 26 points while No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer was runner-up with 108 points.  No. 13 Carnegie Mellon was third (111 pts.) and No. 18 Johns Hopkins fourth (130 pts.).

Senior Lukas Mees, competing for the first time this season, set the pace for the Emory contingent, clocking an 8K time of 25:37 that ranked 19th out of 388 runners.  Freshman Luis Torres made a fine account of himself with his 25:39 placing 21st overall.  Senior Grant Murphy crossed the finish line in 31st place (25:53) while senior Michael Sisario (25:55, 34th) and sophomore Bennett Shaw (26:03, 42nd) closed out the team's scorers.

Competing in the White Division (non D-I schools) of the JSU Foothills Invitational, Emory posted in a third-place effort out of 11 teams, finishing with 89 points.  Montevallo raced to first-place honors with 43 points with Tennessee Wesleyan (83 pts.) the runner-up.

Freshman Chase Gornbein was the Eagles' top finisher, registering an 8K time of 27:06 that ranked 49th out of 161 entries (both the Red and White Divisions were combined for individual finishers).  Senior Philip Edwards turned in a 27:08 that was second on the team and 51st overall.  Freshman Andrew Kliewer (27:20, 54th), junior Greg Litle (27:21, 56th) and junior Winston Leung (27:28, 62nd) rounded out the team's scorers.

Emory returns to action on October 15 when it sends representatives to the Inter-Regional Border Battle in Glassboro, New Jersey and the Berry Invitational.
