2004 Athletes Of The Week

(May 10 co-honoree) - Mary Nicol led Emory with a .625 batting average in the NCAA Division III regional championships. The junior was 10-for-16 at the plate with three walks and a sacrifice hit in five tournament games. Nicol was a combined 4-for-5 in a pair of games against the No. 20 team in the nation. Her .625 average is the second highest ever by an Eagle in an NCAA regional tournament. Nicol was named to the NCAA regional all-tournament team. Two years ago, Nicol made the all-tournament team at the NCAA softball World Series. She did not compete in the post-season last year due to a knee injury.


(May 10 co-honoree) - Christine O'Brien did not allow a run in three appearances in the NCAA Division III regional championship. The junior pitched a pair of complete-game shutouts to finish with a perfect 0.00 earned run average in 18 and one-third innings. She was named to the NCAA regional all-tournament team. O'Brien tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout against Averett (Va.) and a seven-hit, complete game shutout against University of the South (Tenn.). Last season, O'Brien allowed only one run (unearned) in 14 and one-third innings at the NCAA softball World Series.


(April 26) - Jennifer Harrigan drove in 10 runs in five games last week. Harrigan, who batted .615 during the course of the week, picked up six doubles and her second home run of the season. In the first game of a doubleheader against Maryville College (TN), the junior tied a school record by hitting three doubles in one game. She also knocked in four runs and scored three. In the second game, Harrigan went 3-for-3, picking up two more doubles and driving in an additional two runs. For the season, Harrigan increased her team-leading doubles total to 16 and her batting average to .392. The Eagles, 34-10 this year, ended their regular season by winning 14 out of their last 15 games.


(April 19) - Elizabeth Hampson hit .800 last week in 10 plate appearances to help Emory University to a 3-0 record for the week. Hampson, batting a team leading .407 this year, picked up four hits in five at bats and five walks. The senior also hit her fifth home run of the season, scored five runs and stole a base. In a game against Agnes Scott, Hampson went 2-for-3 with two runs and a grand slam home run. The home run puts her one shy of tying the single season school record of six and increases her school career record to 13. The Eagles are now 29-9 on the season.


(April 12) - Christine O'Brien struck out 12 batters in 12.1 innings pitched last week for Emory University, the 25th ranked team in the nation. O'Brien was 2-0 in three appearances and two starts last week, allowing only two earned runs for a 1.14 ERA during the week. In a 2-1 win against LaGrange, O'Brien did not allow an earned run in seven innings pitched, giving up six hits and striking out six. O'Brien has a 12-4 with a 0.91 ERA for the season and 102 strikeouts in 115 innings. The Eagles have a 26-9 record so far this season.

Allison Bouknight hit .455 in four games last week to help Emory University improve to 26-9 on the season. Bouknight picked up five hits in eleven at bats, including two multi-hit games, bringing her season average to .333. In a 1-0 win against LaGrange, the junior catcher went 2-for-2 and ended a scoring threat in the fifth inning by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second. Emory, the 25th ranked team in the nation, was perfect in four games last week with a 4-0 record.


(March 29) - Betsy Bruinsma batted .500 in three games last week for Emory University. Bruinsma, who was named University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and placed on the all-conference first team last week, picked up five hits in 10 at bats while driving in three runs and scoring two of her own, giving her a team high of 26 runs scored. The freshman outfielder went on to steal two bases to increase her team-leading total to a perfect nine stolen bases in as many attempts this season. In a game against Maryville (TN), Bruinsma went 3-for 4 with a double, three RBI and a stolen base. The Eagles, ranked third in the preseason poll, now have a 22-9 record this season.


(March 22) - Nicole Kovski pitched the third seven-inning perfect game in Emory University history in a game against Marietta (Ohio). Kovksi struck out seven batters over seven innings in the game, the second perfect game of her career, along with her second career no-hitter (not including a combined no-hitter in 2001). In five games last week, the senior compiled a 4-1 record with a 1.67 ERA, and struck out 18. Against Illinois Wesleyan, the fifth ranked team in the nation, Kovski picked up a win, allowing one run on three hits in 4.1 innings. On the season, Kovski has compiled a record of 11-4 and an ERA of 1.31. The Eagles, ranked third in the nation, are 20-8 this season.


(March 15) - Emory University's Christine O'Brien made a valiant effort to extend the team's streak of three consecutive conference titles. In the annual University Athletic Association tournament in Florida, O'Brien posted a 0.21 earned run average in 33.1 innings with 36 strikeouts. She was the winning pitcher in three of the Eagles' six wins. Her two losses were both 1-0 decisions, one in extra innings, to the eventual conference champion. O'Brien struck out a school-record 13 batters in a four-hit shutout win against Brandeis (Mass.).


(March 8) - Emory University's Jennifer Harrigan took over the team batting lead by hitting .667 in four games last week. The junior third baseman was 6-for-9 at the plate with two doubles and five RBIs. The outburst boosted her season batting average to a team-high .500 (10-for-20) with a .650 slugging percentage. Harrigan helped the Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the nation, to three wins in four games.


(March 1) - Elizabeth Hampson batted .455 and drove in six runs over the course of seven games last week for Emory University. In a doubleheader against Ferrum College (VA), the senior first baseman went 4-7 with four RBI, a double and a home run. The home run, Hampson's second of the season and tenth of her collegiate career, ties her for the Emory career home run record. Hampson leads the team in home runs this season, and is second on the team in average (.462) and RBI (8). Emory, ranked third in the nation, has compiled a record of 6-3 to start the season.


(Feb. 16) - Christine O'Brien pitched only the second seven-inning perfect game in Emory history in a 2-0 win over the University of the South. The junior struck out eight batters in her first start of the year. O'Brien, who was ranked in the top 15 nationally in wins and ERA last season, only allowed four balls hit out of the infield during the course of the game. The Eagles, ranked third in the nation, swept the doubleheader against the University of the South to open the season 2-0.
