The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team came away with a sweep of a
home doubleheader against LaGrange College Friday afternoon,
topping the Panthers by a 3-1 margin in the opener before
registering a tight 2-0 decision in the second contest. The
two victories boost the Eagles’ overall record to 29-2-1
while LaGrange slips to 15-10.
In a pair of pitching duels, freshman Lena Brottman picked up her
13th win in 14 decisions, going the distance in the
first game and allowing just five hits while striking out
three. Emory scored its initial run in the bottom of the
first when sophomore third baseman Danna Goodenough tagged an
offering from LaGrange hurler Kayla Folds over the left field fence
for her third homer of the campaign. The Panthers knotted
things up in their half of the fourth when Katie Hein socked a
homer. Emory jumped out to a 3-1 advantage in the fifth
when a one-out, two-run single by freshman Megan Light drove in
Claire Bailey and Goodenough. LaGrange put on a mild threat
in the top of the seventh when it had two runners on with two out,
but Brottman worked her way out the jam to secure the triumph.
The second game was a scoreless battle until Emory broke through
with one run in its half of the fifth. After the first two
batters were retired, Light doubled to right center and then scored
on a single by junior Jessica Thomas. The Eagles tacked on
another run in the sixth following a perfectly executed double
steal that saw Bailey swipe home and Nikki Perez second base.
Though the nightcap was a low-scoring affair, both teams had
several scoring chances and both left nine runners stranded.
Emory finished with 11 hits, three by Perez, while the Panthers
totaled nine safeties, three by Hein. Junior Jaclyn
Jacobi notched her first win in the circle, turning in a solid
effort in relief of Brottman who started. Jacobi tossed 4 1/3
innings of scoreless ball, allowing seven hits and fanning one.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 9) when it plays three
home games. The Eagles entertain Rhodes College in a pair of
contests starting at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Spelman College in
a single affair at 2:00 p.m.
