A two-out, two-run double by sophomore Dana Goodenough in the
top of the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and gave the No.
2-ranked Emory softball team a 5-3 victory in the first game of a
doubleheader at Huntingdon College Tuesday afternoon. The
Hawks then used some last-inning heroics of their own in securing a
5-4 victory in the nightcap. The split leaves Emory’s
overall record at 27-2-1 while Huntingdon stands 16-8.
Freshman Lauren Gorodetsky keyed Emory’s 10-hit attack in the
opener, going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring twice.
Freshman pitcher Lena Brottman earned the win, tossing a complete
game and allowing just six hits while striking out 10. Emory
fell behind in the bottom of the fourth when the Hawks scored all
of their runs. The Eagles battled back in the top of the
fifth, tying the game with the key blow a lead-off homer by junior
catcher Jessica Boni, her fourth of the campaign.
In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their half
of the third with a single by freshman Megan Light and a sacrifice
fly by junior Jessica Thomas knocking in the runs. Huntingdon
tied the contest with single tallies in the fourth and fifth frames
setting the stage for a wild seventh. In the Emory half of
the inning, Gorodetsky reached first after a Hawks’
error. With Gorodetsky on second and with two outs, senior
Brittany Boeshore came through with a clutch two-run homer that
pushed Emory out to a 4-2 advantage. It was Boeshore’s
fourth round tripper of the campaign. The Eagles’ lead
was short-lived however, as the Huntingdon scored three runs
without seeing a batter retired in the bottom of the inning.
The big blow was a two-run walk-off double by Jessica Sharker that
pushed across the tying and winning runs.
Emory returns to action on Friday when it hosts LaGrange College in
a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
