Emory Softball Splits Two Wednesday Games At UAA Tourney

Emory Softball Splits Two Wednesday Games At UAA Tourney

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team split a pair of games  on the second day of the University Athletic Association Tournament, defeating Case Western, 7-2,  in its first contest before falling to No. 21-ranked Washington University by a 7-6 count, ending the squad's 14-game win streak.  The Eagles stand 20-2 overall, 3-1 in the league.

In the opener against Case, the Eagles did all their offensive damage over the first two innings.  Senior Jessica Boni's two-run homer was the big hit in a four-run first inning while senior left fielder Jessica Thomas contributed a sacrifice fly.  After the Spartans sliced the Emory in half in the top of the second frame following a two-run homer by Kaeleen Boden, the Eagles responded with three runs in their half of the inning capitalizing on a pair of CWRU errors.  Senior Megan Light came through with the key hit in that inning, a two-run double that scored Claire Bailey and Lauren Gorodetsky.  Sophomore pitcher Amanda Kardys ran her record to 4-0 on the year, coming on in relief of starter Lena Brottman and tossing 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Emory got off to a quick start against the Bears of WU, pushing across four runs in the top of the first. A two-out double by Thomas scored Sophia Tarte with the initial score while freshmen Micah Scharff and Brooke Healey came through with run-producing singles later on in the inning.  Wash U. chipped away at the Emory lead, scoring once in both the first and third innings  to draw to within 4-2.   The Bears then crossed the plate five runs in the bottom of the fourth, two of which were unearned, sending a total of 10 batters to the plate en route to claiming a 7-4 advantage.   After picking up just one hit from the second through sixth innings, the Emory bats woke up in the seventh.   Bailey led off with a double and then scored following a dramatic pinch hit homer by junior Meaghan Schultz, her first of the season.  Following a ground out, Light singled and then moved to second following a walk to Thomas.  After a fielder's choice put Emory runners at the corner with two out, the Eagles saw their comeback end when WU Oliva Cook struck out the final Emory batter.

Emory returns to action on Thursday when it plays Brandeis at 12:30 p.m.
