No. 2 Emory Softball Hosts Piedmont

No. 2 Emory Softball Hosts Piedmont

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team looks to remain undefeated at home this Friday (Mar. 30) when it plays host to Piedmont College in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.

The Eagles head into Friday's action the owners of a 25-3 overall record, 14-0 in home endeavors.  Emory has captured its last four contests and is coming off a sweep of a doubleheader against LaGrange College last Sunday by 5-0 and 10-0 (5 inn.) scores.   Senior Jessica Boni went three-for-six at the plate in the two games and blasted a three-run homer, her sixth round tripper of the season, in the second game to highlight the team's offensive attack, while senior pitcher Bridget Holloway fashioned an outstanding complete-game outing in the opener, allowing just two hits and fanning five en route raising her record to 13-1 on the year.  Holloway's win total leads all UAA hurlers and was tied for the No. 1 spot among all D-III players through games played March 25.  Holloway's whitewash of the Panthers lowered her ERA to 1.74, good for sixth place on the UAA ladder and 45th nationally.

Emory shows a classy hitting mark of .351 that places it first in the league and 37th on the national stage.  The Eagles have homered 20 times and its mark of 0.71 homers per game places them 29th among all Division III teams in that category.   Senior left fielder Jessica Thomas tops the squad with a hitting mark of .425, good for the fifth spot on the UAA list.   Thomas sets the pace on the team in both hits (37) and doubles (13), and  her 26 RBIs is third on the team's score sheet. Sophomore Sophia Tarte claims a .411 batting average and is tied for the team lead with 26 runs scored.   Sophomore Megan Light continues to swing a big bat, with a .391 effort at the plate that includes a team-high seven homers and a club-leading 32 RBIs.

Piedmont, coached by Terry Martin, will bring a won-lost ledger of 9-7 into Friday's twinbill.  In their most recent action, the Lions split a doubleheader at Truett-McConnell College on Monday, capturing the opener by a 4-1 count before coming out on the short end of an 8-5 verdict in the finale.

Emory has won the last five meetings between the schools and posts an all-time mark of 21-7 against Piedmont.  Four of the last six games have been decided by one run.
