Emory Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Maryville College

Emory Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Maryville College

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team ran its win streak to eight games Saturday afternoon following a sweep of a doubleheader at Maryville College.  The Eagles claimed the opener by a 3-1 margin before earning a 7-2 decision in the second contest.  The two victories raise Emory's overall record to 29-3 while the Scots slip to 11-21.

Senior pitcher Bridget Holloway tossed a complete-game, six-hit gem in the opener, striking out seven and not allowing any walks in boosting her season record to 15-1.   Over her last 37 innings in the circle, Holloway has issued just one base-on-balls while fanning 30.  Emory struck for two runs in the top of the second when freshman Moira Sullivan opened the frame with a single before eventually scoring on a passed ball.  Sophomore centerfielder Lauren Gorodetsky scored the other run when she crossed the plate following a sacrifice bunt by junior Dana Goodenough.  The Eagles scored their final run in the top of the fourth when junior Meaghan Schultz hit a two-out solo homer, her second of the season.

The finale started out as a pitching duel between Emory's Lena Brottman and MC's Brittany Henry with each pitcher holding their opponent scoreless through four innings.  The Eagles finally broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth when freshman Ellen Shapiro led off the frame with a pinch-hit triple.  Sophomore Claire Bailey then followed with a walk, putting runners on the corner.  Henry then fanned the next two Emory batters, however on the latter strikeout Shapiro scored and Bailey, who stole second earlier, advanced to third when the catcher had to throw down to first base to record the out.   Gorodetsky then came through with an infield single that scored Bailey while advancing to second on a throwing error.  Gorodetsky would eventually come around to score following back-to-back wild pitches.

Maryville countered with a pair of runs in their half of the frame with Henry and Chastity Smith each delivering two-out run-producing singles.   The Eagles tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a two-out double by Goodenough that scored Shapiro and sophomore Megan Light.  After relief pitcher Amanda Kardys blanked the Scots in the sixth, Emory closed out the game's scoring in the seventh when Gorodetsky led off with an inside-the-park homer, her second this week, followed by a round tripper by senior Jessica Thomas, her third home run of the campaign.   The Eagles totaled 10 hits in the contest with Gorodetsky picking up three safeties and Shapiro hitting safely twice.  Brottman pocketed the win, her eighth in as many decisions this year, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing five hits while striking out two.  Kardys earned her second save, hurling the final 2 1/3 innings and fanning four while allowing just one hit.

Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 24) when it hosts Piedmont College in a twinbill starting at 2:00 p.m.
