No. 2 Emory Softball Closes Out Regular Season

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team, winners of its last eight games, closes out the regular season when it hosts a pair of doubleheaders.  On Tuesday (Apr. 24), the Eagles entertain Piedmont College starting at 2:00 p.m., before taking on Covenant College the following afternoon starting at 2:30 p.m.

The Eagles head into the final week of the regular season with an overall slate of 29-3 (14-0 at home). Over the weekend, the Eagles posted a sweep of a twinbill at Maryville College, topping the Scots by a 3-1 count in the first game before posting a 7-2 decision in the finale.   Sophomore center fielder Lauren Gorodetsky enjoyed a productive day, going a combined four-for-seven at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two.  She hit safely on three occasions in the second game including an inside-the-park home run, her second of the week.  Senior pitcher Bridget Holloway notched her 15th win in 16 decisions with a complete-game six-hit outing in the first affair while sophomore Lena Brottman earned the decision in the second contest, tossing 4 2/3 innings before giving way to sophomore Amanda Kardys who pocketed her second save of the campaign.

Emory starts the week, hitting a hefty .346 as a team while opponents have been limited to a .233 average.  The Eagles have pounded out 25 homers this season and have registered 14 contests of 10 or more hits. 

Piedmont, coached by Terry Martin, comes to town with an overall record of 21-11.  The Lions have been on a roll of late, winning nine of their last 12 games.  Piedmont split a home doubleheader against Agnes Scott on Sunday, capturing the first game by an 8-0 count before dropping a 9-1 verdict in the finale. As a team, PC shows  a hitting mark of .305 compared to .234 for its opponents.

Covenant College sports an overall ledger of 20-16 following a 5-3 setback to Huntingdon College on Saturday.  The Scots, coached by Sara Russell are hitting .304 as a team while the opposition shows a .266 average.
