Emory Softball Blitzes Piedmont Softball In Doubleheader Sweep

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team boosted its win streak to 10 games Tuesday afternoon following a sweep of a home doubleheader against Piedmont College.  The Eagles won the opener by a 12-4 count in five innings before hammering out a six-inning 8-0 decision in the second contest.  The two victories raise Emory's overall record to 31-3 while the Lions slip to 21-13.

The Eagles pounded out 19 hits in the first affair, the second-most this season and 10th-highest in school history.   Freshman Micah Scharff was one of six Eagles to hit safely, going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring three times while knocking in a pair of runs on the strength of a two-run homer, her first collegiate round tripper.  Senior left fielder Jessica Thomas and sophomore Megan Light both collected three hits in four plate appearances as did sophomore second baseman Claire Bailey.   Senior Jessica Boni drove in four runs, including a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth as part of a five-run outburst that ended the contest.   Senior pitcher Bridget Holloway was the beneficiary of the offensive fireworks, notching her 16th win in 17 decisions, tossing all five frames and allowing seven hits while striking out three.   The victory was Holloway's 59th of her career and enabled her to move into sole possession of second place on the Eagles' all-time list.  Over her last 42 innings of work, Holloway has fanned 33 opponents while issuing just one walk.

Emory kept the pressure on in the finale, putting up runs in four of the five innings that were contested, and making the most of eight walks and nine Piedmont wild pitches.  Boni picked up three hits and knocked in two runs while Scharff capped off a big afternoon with a pair of hits and a RBI.  After scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the second, the Eagles scored twice in the third, the first run coming on a bases-loaded single by Boni followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman Moira Sullivan.   Emory tacked on four more runs in its half of the fourth with Scharff, sophomore Megan Light and Bailey all coming through RBIs.  Sophomore Amanda Kardys drew the start in the circle and chalked up her sixth win in eight decisions, throwing all five innings and surrendering just one hit and fanning four.

Emory returns to action on Wednesday (Apr. 25) when it hosts Covenant College in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.  The two games against the Scots will close out the regular season for Emory.
