Emory Softball Drops First Game Of Doubleheader vs. Case -- 2nd Game Suspended And Will Resume On Saturday

The Emory softball team opened University Athletic Association play on Friday with a setback to Case Western in the first game of a doubleheader. The second contest was suspended on the account of darkness and will resume on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the Eagles ahead of the Spartans by a 5-0 margin heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Case Western rallied for an eight-inning 9-8 decision over Emory in the opener of the weekend's four-game set, raising its record to 8-5 while the Eagles slipped to 15-8.

GAME 1
** Senior Taylor Forte goes 4-for-4 at the plate and scores a run for the Eagles' attack.
** Freshman designated player Jessie Michael picks up a pair of safeties and posts a four-RBI afternoon on the strength of a grand slam in the top of the fifth that closed out a five run-frame, giving Emory an 8-5 lead.
** Trailing by a 2-0 margin, Emory pushes across three runs in the top of the second when junior Ashley Powers socks the first of three Eagle homers on the day, a three-run blast.
** Sophomore Lana Herrmann leads off the fifth with her third round tripper of the season.  The Eagles string together four more runs in the inning, culminated by Michael's grand slam.
** Emory led, 8-5, heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans stay alive with a three-run frame to force extra innings.
** The Spartans break the deadlock in the eighth inning when an infield single by Maren Waldner scores Nicole Doyle.
** Emory sophomore Sam Vincent extends her hitting streak to six games after going 1-for-2.

GAME 2
**
Before the game was suspended, the starting pitchers, Sami Feller of Emory and Katie Dzierwa of CWRU hang goose eggs through the first four innings.
**
Emory breaks loose for five runs in the top of the fifth, with sophomore Cassie Baca knocking in the first tally with a one-out double that plates Herrmann, who led off the frame with a walk and then got to third base following a sacrifice by Kinsey Glasgow and a wild pitch.
** After a Taylor Forte single pushed home Bacca, Michael smacks a two-run homer, her third of the year, to give the Eagles a 4-0 edge.
** Sophomore Janelle Turnquest made it back-to-back homers with a solo blast, her second of the year, to close out the scoring.
