Emory Softball Posts Doubleheader Sweep At Piedmont

The Emory softball team ventured to Piedmont College on Saturday and registered a sweep of a doubleheader over the Lions.  The Eagles posted an 8-1 triumph in the opener before earning a 4-3 decision in the finale.  Emory now stands 3-1 on the year while Piedmont slipped to 5-7.

In the first contest, the Eagles broke open a 1-1 game in the top of the fourth, making the most of three PC errors and erupting for a five-run frame.  Colussi highlighted the inning with a two-run single that drove in freshmen Rachel Cocolis and Page Nellis.  Emory put more distance between the hosts the following inning with two more runs that included Colussi picking up her third ribbie after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Junior first baseman Mattie Ryan aided in the victory, hitting safely in all three of her plate appearances and scoring two runs.  Senior pitcher Madison Schaefer tossed a masterful complete-game three-hitter, striking out seven while issuing just one walk.  Schaefer retired the last 13 Lions she faced.

In the finale, Ryan and senior Allie Moberg each contributed a pair of safeties and one RBI.  Schaefer came on in relief of starter Natalie Swift and brought home the win, tossing five innings and allowing two runs and seven hits while fanning five.  Piedmont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its half of the first, but Emory knotted the score in the top of the third when a two-bagger by Moberg plated Cocolis.  Emory crossed the plate three times in the sixth with Ryan, senior outfielder Megan Weisenberg and Nellis driving in runs.  The Lions threatened in their last at-bat, scoring twice and having the tying run on second with one out.  However, Schaefer got out of the jam by striking out the last two Piedmont batters.

Emory's next action is scheduled for Mar. 27 when it plays a twin bill at Georgia Gwinnett College.
