Softball Splits Doubleheader with Brandeis, Looks to Sunday Finale

The Emory University softball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against the Brandeis Judges at Cooper Field.

The Eagles now sit 13-12 on the season while the Judges hold an 11-2 record. Brandeis' loss in the first game marked their first loss in UAA play this season.

Game 1: Emory 2, Brandeis 1

The first game of the afternoon ended in dramatic fashion with a walk off double from junior Natalie Swift. Freshman Mackenzie Duford got the start for Emory allowing just one run over seven innings of work.

The Judges scored early in the top of the first capitalizing on an error from the Eagles' defense. The rest of the game was held scoreless from both pitchers until the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Kayla Lang started the inning with a single to right field and was advanced to second on a single from freshman Ashley Chu. With two outs, Swift drove a double to right field scoring both runners to win the game 2-1.

Duford allowed just four hits and had four strikeouts in game one while allowing just one walk.

Game 2: Brandeis 4, Emory 2

Once again, the Judges jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first due to a single to center field. Brandeis scored again in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead over the Eagles. In the bottom of the second, Emory capitalized on a passed ball to cut the lead to 3-1.

Junior Page Nellis cut the lead again in the bottom of the third inning with a single up the middle to score senior Tyler Miller to make it a 3-2 game.

The Judges scored again in the top of the sixth and took the second game 4-2.

The Eagles and the Judges will face each other in the series finale on Sunday, April 2 at 2 pm in Atlanta, Georgia.
