2023 Softball Season Recap

2023 Softball Season Recap

The 2023 Emory University softball program was back for a full length season for just the second time since 2019 and saw a young group of athletes take the field all season long.

The Eagles finished the season with an 18-20 record and went 8-11 in the conference to finish fourth in the UAA. Over the course of the season, Emory saw standout performances from the young roster leading to three All-UAA selections, All-Region honors and twelve Athlete of the Week selections.

A duo of freshman led the way as standouts for the Eagles both offensively and defensively this year.

Freshman Ashley Chu started her early Emory career in dramatic fashion and would establish herself at second base and as the leadoff batter early in the season. She led both the Eagles and the conference with a .444 batting average over a 38-game span and registered a UAA-leading .490 on base percentage. Chu notched 60 hits on the year without ever recording an extra-base hit which also led both Emory and the conference. Her speed on the basepaths never went unnoticed as she finished the season with 26 stolen bases in 28 attempts placing her third in the UAA. Unsurprisingly, Chu earned UAA Rookie of the Year for her efforts during the season and earned All-UAA First Team recognition. She was also named to the Region 6 Second Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the first Eagle to do so since 2018.

Freshman Ella Hoyle also started her career with a bang becoming a strong utility player both catching and playing third base. Hoyle registered a batting average of .405 finishing second on the team just behind Chu and fifth in the conference. Becoming one of the leading scorers on the team, she finished second on the team and in the UAA with 37 RBI over a 38-game span and also established herself as a base runner by holding a .486 on base percentage good for third on the team and in the conference. Her efforts garnered her UAA Athlete of the Week honors during the season and All-UAA First Team recognition.

Senior Tyler Miller also became a force to be reckoned with offensively and defensively during her last season in an Emory uniform. After being recruited as a catcher, Miller played first base, shortstop, third base and as catcher this season alone. She established herself early on as an offensive power leading both the Eagles and the UAA with 45 RBI and with seven home runs, the most in a single season for Miller. She finished third on the team with a .367 batting average but led the team with a .648 slugging percentage in 38 games. Miller earned UAA Athlete of the Week three different times this season and earned All-UAA Second Team honors for her final season. She also was named to the CSC Academic All-America Third Team at the end of the season.

On the defensive side, freshman Mackenzie Duford made an impact becoming the team's go-to pitcher in her rookie season. Duford pitched the most innings out of any pitcher in the UAA this season (158.1) and only allowed 20 walks on the year. She finished eighth in the conference with a 2.79 ERA and fifth in the UAA with 82 strikeouts. Duford was named UAA Athlete of the Week six times in her rookie season.

The Eagles started their season with a four-game homestand due to the warm weather in Georgia and split those games to open the season with a 2-2 record. The team then finished the month of February with four wins against Agnes Scott and Rose-Hulman. Emory continued their home games into the month of March with two wins against Covenant before taking on Huntingdon in a two-game series. The Eagles went 4-4 during their final non-conference games before starting their conference schedule.

Emory started their conference slate off with a bang, earning a series win over top-5 Case Western Reserve. Junior Natalie Swift played a major role in the first win driving in the winning run in the seventh inning to complete the walk-off. The team followed by splitting the series with Brandies before hitting a slow stretch. The Eagles went 4-8 over their last three series before ending the season with a historical 18-7 win over Carnegie Mellon.

The Emory softball team also had a successful year in the classroom with all eligible athletes earning 2023 UAA Spring All-Academic honors with Miller also earning CSC Academic All-America Third Team recognition.
