Softball Ends Road Stint in Kentucky with 5-1 Win over Spalding

The Emory University softball program saw its second straight win against the Spalding Eagles on Wednesday afternoon taking game two 5-1 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season while Spalding falls to 1-7 on the year. Once again, freshman Ellie Zerr continues to be an RBI machine for the Eagles posting three on Wednesday with a home run and totaling four against Spalding. Freshman Lexi Bach (2-2) walked away with the win in the circle throwing five innings allowing just one run and zero walks. Sophomore Isabel Cohen was able to get the save, her first of the season, closing the last two innings for Emory.

Emory got out to a quick start with sophomore Ashley Chu and senior Page Nellis notching back-to-back singles but were unable to get past third base and were stranded. Bach posted three quick outs in both the first and second inning keeping Spalding hitless through two innings.

With one out in the top of the third, the Eagles were able to load the bases highlighted by a hit by pitch and an error from Spalding. Freshman Sonia Klein brought in Emory's first run of the day with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Nellis but Spalding answered with a single and a double in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one.

Both offenses were able to get a hit in the fourth inning but were able to move runners after stellar pitching from both sides. Nellis was hit by her second pitch of the game to start the top of the fifth inning before Zerr had her big moment driving her third home run of the season to left-center field giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Bach finished her day on a high note with three quick outs in the bottom of the fifth opening the circle for Cohen to save.

Both Emory and Spalding made defensive changes in the sixth inning after their pitching changes with each side getting just one hit in the sixth. The Eagles scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning with Chu starting the inning with a single and a stolen base. After advancing to third on a groundout, Zerr singled Chu in and later scored on a passed ball. Cohen allowed just one hit in the bottom of the seventh but Spalding was unable to capitalize on the moment and the Eagles took the game 5-1.

The Eagles will be back at Cooper Field in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, March 16 for a doubleheader with Illinois Wesleyan with the first game slated to start at 12:00 PM.
