Softball Falls to #6 Ranked Case Western Reserve in Series Opener

The Emory University softball team dropped the series opener against the No. 6 ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans, 9-2, on Friday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Eagles fall to 16-9 on the season and sit 2-3 in conference play while the Spartans remain undefeated in conference play this season. Freshman Ellie Zerr led the Eagles offensively notching her sixth home run of the season to lead the conference. Sophomore Ashley Chu saw her 28-game hitting streak come to an end on Friday. The 28 games sets the new program record for Emory and ranks second in UAA history.

Emory was able to score first in the top of the first inning with a one-out walk to senior Page Nellis before Zerr drove the long ball to left field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Eagles were able to hold the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the first to keep their lead.

The Spartans were able to score six runs in the bottom of the second inning taking advantage of two doubles and a fielder's choice. They scored another two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single to right-center field before tacking on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 9-2 victory.

The teams will face off again on Saturday, April 6 in a doubleheader with game one slated to begin at 12:00 PM.
