Softball Drops Doubleheader to #6 Case Western Reserve

The Emory University softball team dropped its doubleheader to the No. 6 ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles now sit 16-11 on the season and hold a 2-5 record in UAA conference play. The Spartans remain undefeated in the conference following Saturday's doubleheader. Freshman Ellie Zerr knocked her seventh home run of the season during game one and marked her first time in back-to-back games after homering in Friday's matchup.

Game 1: Case Western Reserve 5, Emory 1

The Eagles were able to get a base runner in the top of the first inning but the Spartans jumped first in the bottom of the inning taking a two-run lead after a double and a sacrifice fly.

Zerr cut CWRU's lead in half in the top of the third inning with a home run to left field. The Spartans answered again with another run in the bottom half of the third to take a 3-1 lead after three innings.

The Spartans went scoreless for the next three innings before they tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 5-1 victory in game one.

Game 2: Case Western Reserve 10, Emory 2

Sophomore Ella Hoyle helped the Eagles take a 1-0 lead after a leadoff double from senior Page Nellis gave Emory a runner in scoring position. Hoyle followed later with a two-out single to center field to score Nellis giving the Eagles their first lead of the day. The Spartans answered with a bases clearing double in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

After the Spartans tacked on three more runs in the second and third, Hoyle and freshman Sonia Klein started the top of the fourth with singles before an RBI double from freshman Abby Wylie scored Emory's second run of the game.

The Spartans were able to close out the game in the bottom of the fifth with their 10th run of the game to secure the 10-2 win.

The Eagles will conclude their series with the Spartans on Sunday, April 7 at 11:00 AM.
