LYNN OBERSCHMIDT NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-UAA

(March 2) - Emory University women's basketball stand-out Lynn Oberschmidt was named to the second team All-UAA.

Oberschmidt led the Eagles to an eight game turn-around this season, finishing at 15-10. She averaged 11.1 points per game this season, which was a team high. She also lead the team in rebounding at 5.8 boards per game.

She notched her career high in points this season when she scored 24 against Carnegie Mellon. She scored in double figures in 13 games this season.

Oberschmidt retires as one of only five Eagles to score 1000 points in her career. She finishes with the second-highest field goal percentage in school history (.509), the fifth most points (1070) and blocks (51), and places 10th in both rebounds (532) and assists (181).

Receiving honorable mention honors was junior guard Beth Bergmann and freshman forward Lora Turner. Bergmann finished the season averaging 9.8 points per game, while hitting 35 three pointers. Her season high in points came against Maryville College (Tenn.) when she record 23 points.

Turner was a solid presence in the paint for the Eagles in her first season of collegiate competition. She averaged 8.7 points per game, while second on the team in rebounding at 5.4 per contest.


EAGLES STUMBLE EARLY IN LOSS TO CASE WESTERN RESERVE

(Feb. 25) - Emory University (15-10, 5-9) lost their season finale to Case Western Reserve (13-12, 6-8) 65-46.

Seniors Lynn Oberschmidt, Katie Bergfeld, and Stephanie Holland each played in their final game of their careers.

Oberschmidt dished out a team-high four assists, adding four points and five rebounds. The senior leads the team this season in points, rebounds, and assists.

Oberschmidt retires as one of only five Eagles to score 1000 points in her career. She finishes with the second-highest field goal percentage in school history (.509), the fifth most points (1070) and blocks (51), and places 10th in both rebounds (532) and assists (181).

Senior Katie Bergfeld led the team with eight points and six rebounds. She matched her career-high with a team-high three steals. Bergfeld also added a block, placing her sixth on the Eagle's all time list with 44.

Stephanie Holland contributed off the bench with two points and two rebounds.

Freshman Kate Garrity scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds.

Case guard Dana Dempsey scored a game-high 17 points on six for eight shooting from the field. Carmen Rowan led the game with eight rebounds, adding a team-high four assists.

Emory stumbled early, surrendering a 19-4 run at the beginning of the game to give Case a commanding lead. The Eagles never recovered, and Case cruised to an easy victory despite the contributions of an Eagle bench that saw seven different players score.

The Eagles finish the season at 15-10, which is their best record since the 1998-99 campaign and Emory's first winning season since 1999-00. Despite the season-ending loss, the Eagles will have much to look forward to after defeating four ranked teams this season including No. 7 New York University on Jan. 27.


EAGLES FALL TO ROCHESTER 62-50

The Emory women's basketball team fell to the University of Rochester 62-50 on the final home game of the season.

The Eagles and Yellowjackets battled throughout the first half with Emory holding the largest lead at seven on two different occasions. Rochester was able to battle back and take a six point lead before seeing the Eagles cut the lead to one at the half, 28-27.

The second half had Emory grab a one point lead at 31-30 with 18:51 to go. The score was tied at 33-33 when Rochester went on a 9-0 run to give themselves breathing room. Emory could get no closer than five at 42-37 on a layup by Lynn Oberschmidt with 10:49 remaining.

Rochester built as much as a 14-point lead at 62-48 with 22 seconds remaining.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Beth Bergmann with 10 points, including two three pointers. Lora Turner was next in scoring with nine.

Katie Bergfeld, playing in her final home game, lead the way in rebounding with six. Eric Kaplan and Turner each had five.

Also playing in their last home game as an Eagle were seniors Stephanie Holland and Lynn Oberschmidt.

Emory closes out the 2005-06 regular season next Saturday when it travels to Cleveland, Ohio, to take on Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.


EMORY ROUTS CARNEGIE MELLON ON SENIOR NIGHT

(Feb. 17) -  Emory University's women's basketball team ended Senior Night with an 84-43 victory over Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).

Freshmen Kate Garrity and Lora Turner led the team in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Garrity finished the contest 7-of-9, while Turner shot 5-of-6 from the field. Both grabbed a total of five rebounds for the contest, Garrity with three defensive and two offensive and Turner with two defensive and three offensive.  

Senior Stephanie Holland finished the contest with game high 7 rebounds, five defensive and two offensive. Joining Holland in rebounding was senior Katie Bergfeld with six rebounds, one offensively and five defensively.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt tallied eight points, finishing the contest 4-of-6 from the field with two assists and one steal.

Emory jumped out of the gates early with an up-tempo style play. The Eagles commanded a 27-15 lead with 6:44 left to play on a lay-up by Turner.

Emory's post players turned in a solid effort by scoring 49 of the Eagles' 84 points.

The Eagles were able to maintain their lead throughout the entire contest. With a 7-0 run at the end of the first half the Eagle's increased their lead to 39-19; shooting a field goal percentage of 46.9. The second period saw the Eagles improve their shooting percentage in the second half to 64.5 % giving the Eagles the win and the margin of victory for the season.    

Ashley Rothwell led the Tartans in scoring with 12 points.

Emory (15-8, 4-7 UAA) closes the home portion of the 2005-06 season Sunday when it welcomes the University of Rochester (N.Y.) to the Woodruff P.E. Center. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.


EMORY STRUGGLES AGAINST THIRD-RANKED WASHINGTON

(Feb. 12) - Emory University dropped a tough decision 73-51 to Washington University (MO), ranked No. 3 in the nation by d3hoops.com.

Emory freshman Lora Turner led the Eagles with 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.  She has led Emory scorers in four of her last five games and has scored in the double digits in five of her last six games.

Emory freshmen received significant playing time and responded by scoring 30 of the Eagles' 51 points. 

Freshman Kerry Madison led the game with a career-high seven rebounds off the bench and freshman starter Erica Kaplan scored eight points and added two assists and team-high two steals.

Senior Katie Bergfeld scored six points on three for three shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds off the bench.

Washington forwards Danielle Boehler and Kelly Manning led the game with 14 points each.  Boehler also led the Bears with six rebounds.


EMORY FALLS TO CHICAGO

(Feb. 10) - The Emory women's basketball team dropped a 54-36 UAA decision to the University of Chicago, Friday night in Chicago, Ill.

Emory, who was denied a three-game conference winning streak, was led by freshman Lora Turner with nine points and five rebounds. She also collected two steals for the contest.

Junior Beth Bergmann finished the contest with eight points, while freshman Erica Kaplan added eight. Scoring two points a piece were Katie Anding, Lynn Oberschmidt, Kendall Boyd, Kate Corkle, Kerry Madison and Katie Bergfeld.

Leading the team in rebounding were Madison and Kaplan with six each.

The game was close early with Chicago holding a 9-7 lead after a jumper by Oberschmidt. From there the Maroons went on a 9-1 run to take a 10 point led with 8:22 remaining in the second half. UC would hold as much as an 11 point lead before taking a 26-17 lead into the half.

The second period saw Emory fall behind 34-19 before cutting it to 34-23 with 10.33 remaining. Chicago went on a 9-3 run to hold a 43-26 advantage at the 8:03 mark before winning by 18.

Up next for Emory (14-7, 4-6 UAA) is a trip to third-ranked and conference-leading Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is set of 4:00 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast over the Internet via a webcast. A link will be provided at www.go.emory.edu.


EMORY-WASHINGTON BASKETBALL GAMES TO BE BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET

The Emory-Washington basketball doubleheader set for Sunday, Feb. 12, in St. Louis will be broadcast live over the Internet. Game times are set for 2:00 p.m. EST with the men's contest and 4:00 p.m. EST for the women's game.

A link to the game will be provided on both the men's and women's pages of www.go.emory.edu.

This marks the first time in the history of Emory men's and women's basketball that games will be broadcast live over the Internet.

Penn Atlantic, LLC is a Charleston, S.C., based communications and media company focused on aggregating and delivering sports and entertainment programming to a broad range of audiences, including selected NCAA Championships and numerous athletic events from collegiate conferences around the country.

EAGLES BLAST 12TH-RANKED NYU, 70-55

(Feb. 5) - Playing their second nationally ranked opponent of the weekend, the Emory women's basketball team came away with its second win, defeating No. 12 New York University 70-55 at the Woodruff P.E. Center. This marks the fourth nationally ranked opponent to fall to the Eagles this season.

Emory defeated No. 11 Brandeis 65-52, Friday and earlier in the year earned victories over Wisconsin-Oshkosh (60-59) and the same NYU team 75-72.

Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt led all scorers on the afternoon with 20 points. She finished the contest 8-of-11 shooting and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Freshman Lora Turner and sophomore Katie Anding joined Oberschmidt in double figures. Turner finished with 15 points, while Anding had 11. Turner was 4-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She, along with junior Beth Bergmann led the team in rebounding with seven a piece.

Anding turned in a solid effort from the point guard position, knocking down three three pointers to led the team.

Sara Rabinovitch led the Violets with 11 points, while Adrienne Rochetti had 10 for the only two scorers in double figures.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 12 point advantage with 14:38 remaining in the first half at 17-5 off a three-point basket by Anding. Oberschmidt sank two free throws at the 4:40 mark to give Emory its largest lead of the half at 31-11. Emory would take a 39-21 advantage into the locker room.

The second half saw NYU get no closer than 14 at 40-26 with 17:47 remaining. Emory gained the largest lead of the contest at 21 on two seperate occasions, 57-36 at 8:53 and 62-41 at 7:02.

For the game Emory out-rebounded the Violets 50-37. They also shot 76 percent from the free throwline, compared to 41.2 percent for NYU.

Emory returns to action next Friday and Sunday when it travels to Chicago on Feb. 10 and No. 3 Washington on Feb. 12. Gametime for the Chicago game is set for 6:00 p.m. EST and the WashU game for 3:00 p.m. CST.


EMORY UPSETS NO. 11 BRANDEIS

(Feb. 3)  - Emory University's women's basketball team defeated the 11th-ranked (by D3hoops.com) Brandeis University Judges by a score of 62-52 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Freshman forward Lora Turner and junior point guard Beth Bergmann led the team with a game high 16 and 14 points, respectively. Turner shot 7-of-11 from the field and two for four from the free-throw line. Bergmann shot 6-of-11 from the field and finished with two for six from behind the arc. Both Bergmann and Turner finished the contest with four defensive rebounds. Turner also grabbed four offensive rebounds, giving her eight total rebounds for the game.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt finished the contest with a double-double of 10 points and grabbing a game high 10 rebounds, six defensive and four offensive. Oberschmidt finished the contest leading the team with nine assist.

Freshman Kendall Boyd contributed off the bench with a season-high eight points.

Caitlin Malcolm led Brandeis with 19 points with 11-of-14 from the free throw line and 11 rebounds, seven defensive and four offensive. Malcolm eclipsed the 1000 point mark with two free throws that tied the game at 35-35 with 13:56left in the game.

Emory battled Brandeis fiercely throughout the contest with seven ties and four lead changes. Emory's strong defense limited Brandeis to their highest lead of five points in the first two minutes of the game.

 Down at the start of the second half, 31-26, the Eagles went in a 7-0 run to gain the lead at 33-31. From there the two schools battled with Emory gaining a 10-point advantage to gain the victory.

The Eagles have now beaten three nationally ranked opponents this season, including their 60-59 upset of then-ranked No. 17 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Dec. 29, 2005 and New York University then-ranked No.7 on Jan. 7, 2006.

Next up the Eagles will host No.12 New York University on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m.


EMORY FALLS TO NO. 12 BRANDEIS 75-57

(Jan. 29) - Playing against a nationally ranked opponent for the second time in as many games, the Emory women's basketball team fell to 12th-ranked Brandeis University 75-57, Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Mass.

Freshmen Lora Turner and Erica Kaplan led the way for the Eagles (12-6, 2-5 UAA) with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Turner shot 80 percent from the field on 8-of-10 shooting, while also collecting five defensive rebounds.

Kaplan, coming off a 21-point performance Friday night in Emory's upset win over No. 9 NYU finished 4-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-3 from three point range.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt and freshman Kate Garrity also provide scoring support with seven points a piece.

Caitlin Malcolm led Brandeis with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The contest started close with the Eagles holding a 7-6 lead at the 17:01 mark before a 15-4 run by Brandeis had the lead at 21-11. Emory would cut the lead to eight at 25-17, but the Judges pushed the lead to 17 with a minute remaining at 36-19, before taking a 38-22 lead into the half.

The second half saw Brandeis control as much as a 25 point lead, but saw Emory continue to fight throughout the remainder of the contest before falling 75-57. In the second half, the Eagles improved their shooting percentage from 39.1 percent to 50 percent.

Emory will look to return to the win column, this Friday when it plays host to this same Brandeis team with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off from the Woodruff P.E. Center. Last season Emory upset Brandeis, then ranked No. 3 in the country 61-59, at WPEC.


EAGLES UPSET NO. 7 TEAM IN THE NATION NYU 75-72

(Jan. 27)  - Emory University upset New York University, ranked No. 7 in the nation by the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches' Poll and No.9 by d3hoops.com in a 75-72 comeback victory on Friday, January 27 at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Eagles have now beaten two top-ten opponents in the past two years, including their 61-59 upset of then-ranked No. 3 Brandeis on Jan. 23, 2005.  The Eagles' 12-5 record is their best with 17 games played since the 1997-98 season, and the best in head coach Christie Thomaskutty's career.

Freshman Erica Kaplan led the game with a career-high 21 points.  Kaplan made three three-pointers in addition to her five rebounds and two assists.

Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt became only the fifth-ever Eagle to reach the career milestone 1000 points when she scored from the field just 1:49 into the first half.  Oberschmidt scored 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the game to contribute to the Emory win.  She raised her career total to 1,009 points by the end of the game.

Four Eagles scored in the double-digits.  Junior Beth Bergmann scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Lora Turner scored 15 with a team-high eight rebounds.

New York forwards Stephanie Ryba and Sara Rabinovitch each scored a team-high 12 points.  Karen Bachman led the game with 11 rebounds.

Though Emory trailed 37-31 at halftime, they were able to take the lead with 9:03 left in the game thanks to an 8-1 run.  After several lead changes, the Eagles led for the last three minutes of the game.

Emory's 75 points were the second-most the team has scored this season, just shy of the 76 they scored against Sewanee on Dec. 6.

The win is Emory's first against New York since their 79-69 victory over the then-ranked No. 1 Violets on February 7, 1997.  This is the first Eagles road victory against New York since their 70-69 win way back on December 4, 1992.

The Eagles look to build on their current two-game winning streak when they play Brandeis University (MA), ranked No. 12 by d3hoops.com, at Waltham, MA on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.


EAGLES CRUSH CARNEGIE MELLON 72-52

(Jan. 22) - Led by senior Lynn Oberschmidt's 24 points, the Emory University women's basketball team returned to its winning ways with a 72-52 drubbing of conference rival Carnegie Mellon.

Oberschmidt played a near flawless game, going 10-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to earn game-high scoring honors. She also led the team in rebounds with eight (five defensive, three offensive).

Also scoring in double-figures was junior Beth Bergmann with 13. Bergmann's total included three baskets from behind the three point line, while also going 2-for-2 at the free throw line.

Freshman Kate Corkle made her first start of the year, scoring seven points, while also turning in two assists.

Emory jumped out of the gates early with an up-tempo style play. The Eagles controlled a 25-14 lead with 7:07 left to play on a three-pointer by Begmann. The lead only dipped below double figures twice the remainder of the first half.

A lay-up by Oberschmidt as time expired in the first half gave the blue and gold its largest lead at 35-22.

The second half was all Emory as the Eagles built as much as a 31 point lead at 69-38 off another of Bergmann's three pointers with 5:15 left in the contest.

Leading the way for the Tartans was Rachelle Roll with 13 as she was the only player from her team in double figures.

For the contest, Emory finished 11-of-12 from the free throw line for 91.7%. For the game they shot 42.6% from the field, compared to 37.3% for Carnegie Mellon.

Emory will look to up its win streak as it travels to two nationally ranked conference opponents. Up next is No. 10 New York University, Jan. 27 for a 6:00 p.m. contest. The Eagles face No. 11 Brandeis, Jan. 29 at 3:00 p.m.


EMORY FALLS TO ROCHESTER 70-47

(Jan. 20) - Emory University lost a tough game on the road to University of Rochester (NY) by the score of 70-47.

Lynn Oberschmidt tied for the team-high with eight points and led the Eagles with six rebounds in the game.  Oberschmidt has led the Eagles in rebounding in five of her last seven games.  She also recorded two blocks.

The young Eagles team continued its trend of quality production from its freshmen, who accounted for 22 of Emory's points.

Freshman Kate Garrity scored eight points off of perfect six for six shooting from the free throw line.  Garrity is 21 for 22 on the season from the line, giving her a team high .955 free-throw shooting percentage.

Freshman guard Erica Kaplan scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds.  She had a team-high three steals.

Freshman Kerry Madison contributed off the bench with her season-high five rebounds.

Rochester players Alex Porter and Jesse Graham led the game with 11 points each.  Porter also led the game with seven rebounds and five steals.

Rochester's defense frustrated the Eagles' offense for the entire first half.  Rochester was able to force Emory mistakes in the half with eight steals and held the Eagles to only 17 points.

The Eagles finished the last 15 minutes of the game on a 30-13 run, but it was not enough to overcome Rochester's big 47 point first half.

The Eagles will look for their first conference victory against Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, January 22 at 2 p.m.


NO. 20 CHICAGO DEFEATS EMORY 72-62

(Jan. 15) - The Emory women's basketball team hosted its second top 25 opponent in as many days on Sunday, turning in a gritty performance before falling 72-62 to the 20th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Leading the way for Emory was senior Mackenzie Bisset with 13 points. Bisset finished the contest 5-for-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. She also collected three rebounds and had one assist.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt and freshmen Erica Kaplan and Kate Corkle each scored nine points for the blue and gold. Oberschmidt grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds, while Kaplan was 2-of-3 from behind the arc and Corkle was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.

The first half saw the Eagles and Maroons battle back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. Chicago was able to up the tally to 12 at 32-20 with 1:46 remaining. The Eagles got to within nine, but trailed 36-26 at the break.

The second half saw Emory come out determined, battling it's top 25 foe. The lead stayed above 10 for the start of the second half before the Eagles fought back and moved withint 2 at 50-48 thanks to an 8-0 run that was capped off by a Lora Turner lay-up.

The two teams traded baskets with Emory coming within one point on three different occasions before tying the game at 61-61 with 1:54 remaining. Chicago would hold Emory to one point the remainder of the contest, scoring 10 mainly on free throws, to get the win.

Nofi Mojidi led the Maroons with 16 points, while Nicaya Rapier led the team in rebounding with 12.

The Eagles now stand 10-4 overall and 0-3 in UAA play. The Maroons improved to 13-1 and 2-1 within conference.

Emory travels away from home for the next four contests, starting with the University of Rochester, Friday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 p.m.


EMORY TURNS IN SOLID EFFORT BEFORE FALLING TO WASHINGTON

(Jan. 13) - Playing against one of the nation's top Division III basketball teams, the Emory women's basketball squad turned in a solid effort before falling to the third-ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears, 71-55.

With the loss Emory falls to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in the University Athletic Association. Washington improved to 12-1 and 2-0 in the UAA.

Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman Erica Kaplan with 16 points. Kaplan finished the night going 5-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

Seniors Mackenzie Bisst and Lynn Oberschmidt added to the point total with nine and eight points, respectivitely. Bissett finished with three three-point baskets, while Oberschmidt was 4-of-9 from the floor and also collected five rebounds.

Freshman Lora Turner was tops in rebounds for the Eagles with six; four coming on the defensive end and two offensive.

The first half saw the Eagles and Bears battle back-and-forth. The Bears built an 11 point lead with 4:18 to go at 29-18, but saw the Eagles fight back with a 10-0 run to make it 29-28 with a little over two minutes remaining. WashU responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 36-28 lead into the half.

The first five minutes of the second half saw both teams continue to swap baskets with WashU building as much as a 15 point lead. Emory stayed within striking distance, getting within nine with 3:26 remaining in the game on a Lynn Oberschmidt jumper.

Leading the way for Washington was Kelly Manning with 22 points. Danielle Beehler was next in scoring with 16.

Emory now turns its attention to the Chicago Maroons, ranked No. 20 in the country, for a Sunday match-up. This will mark the Eagles' second top 25 foe in as many games and third overall. Earlier this season Emory defeated then-No. 17 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh 60-59 on a Katie Rizzo jump shot with three tenths of a second remaining on the clock.

Game time against the Maroons is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


EMORY SWEEPS PIEDMONT FOR THE SEASON

(Jan. 9) - The Emory University women's basketball team defeated Piedmont College with a score of 68-61 moving the team to a 10-2 record for the season. After 12 games the 10-2 record matches the best record in school history.

With 14 points a piece, senior Beth Bergmann and freshman Lora Turner led the team in scoring. Bergmann, currently ranked 50th in the nation for her free throw percentage, finished the contest shooting a perfect seven for seven from the free throw line. Turner ended the contest shooting 50 percent from the free throw line and grabbed eight rebounds, seven offensive and 1 defensive.

Adding to the win was freshman Erica Kaplan, who finished the contest with a game-high 11 rebounds grabbing 9 defensive and 2 offensive. Kaplan shot for a total of seven points, sinking two from behind the arc.

Emory and Piedmont battled for the lead furiously during the game with the lead changing seven times and the score being tied eight times during the first half. With 14:13 left in the second half Emory built a 12 point lead that Piedmont was not able to overcome. Adding to Emory's play was the 23 points the team scored off Piedmont's 26 turnovers.

The Eagles continue their home stand with Washington University on Friday, Jan. 13 at 6:00 p.m


CASE WESTERN RESERVE TOPS EMORY 61-52

(Jan. 7) - The Emory women's basketball team dropped a 61-52 decision to Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland, Ohio, in the conference opener for both schools. Emory now stands 9-2 on the season and 0-1 in UAA play.

The Eagles were led by Lynn Oberschmidt with 17 points, while Mackenzie Bisset added 13. Oberschmidt also led the team in rebounds with 8, collecting five defensive and three offensive. She finished 7 of 11 from the floor and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. Bisset finished 5 of 10 from the floor, while going 3 of 5 from behind the arc to led the team.

The first half saw both teams fight back and forth only to stand tied at 29 heading into halftime. The second half saw Case Western jump out on the Eagles and build as much as a 12 point lead with 8:53 to go in the game.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Amber Hammell and LaVonne Sherald with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Eagles return to action Monday, Jan. 9, when they host the Piedmont College Lions. Earlier in the season, Emory defeated Piedmont 69-49. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.


EMORY EDGES PAST JOHNS HOPKINS

(Jan. 4) - The Emory women's basketball team won their eighth straight contest over Johns Hopkins University with a score of 58-55.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt finished the contest with a double-double, grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds and 14 points. With 2:12 remaining in the game Oberschmidt broke a 53-53 tie to give the Eagles a two point lead. After Johns Hopkins tied the game again at 55-55 Oberschmidt hit a jumper with 00:43 seconds remaining to give Emory the final lead of the game (57-55).

Joining Oberschmidt with double figures is junior Beth Bergmann with 10 points. After coming off of the bench, Bergmann finished the contest shooting five for six from the free throw line, including a late free throw giving the Eagles a three point lead with 00:20 seconds left in the contest.

Emory entered the game ranked 16th in the nation in field goal percentage, shooting 45 percent this season.

Emory begins UAA play against Case-Western Saturday at 1:00 p.m.


EMORY DEFEATS MARYVILLE COLLEGE FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

(Dec. 31) - Emory University defeated Maryville College with a 70-54 victory moving them to a 8-1 record.

Leading scorer Beth Bergmann finished the contest with 23 points, shooting eight for ten from the free throw line. Along with six rebounds, Bergmann was able to collect six steals from the Lady Scots.

Freshmen Erica Kaplan and Kate Garrity along with senior Katie Bergfeld shot a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line. Bergfeld and Garrity finished two for two, while Kaplan shot four for four from the line. The Eagles shot 90 percent from the free throw line during the first half.

Senior Lynn Oberschmidt along with Garrity finished the contest leading the team by grabbing seven rebounds a piece. Freshman Lora Turner also provided support on the boards, pulling down six.

Emory continues its homestand with Johns Hopkins University (MD), Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 6:00 p.m.


EAGLES UPSET 17th-RANKED UNIVERISTIY OF WISCONSIN-OSHKOSH

(Dec. 29) - The Emory Eagles won their sixth straight contest with a 60-59 victory over nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Trailing the entire second half the Eagles were able to defeat the Titans with a base line jump shot with 0:00.3 seconds left on the clock by sophomore Katie Rizzo.

Senior Katie Bergfeld and Junior Beth Bergmann led the team with 13 points each. Bergmann was six for six from the free throw line, while Bergfeld shot three for four. Both Bergfeld and Bergmann finished the contest grabbing five rebounds a piece.

Freshman Erica Kaplan led the team in three pointers making two out of five and finishing the contest with 11 points. Lora Turner, also a freshman, led the team with eight rebounds, five of which were offensive.

Emory's improved play from the first half to the second had them shooting 28.6 percent from the three point line in the second half compared to just 22.2 percent in the first. They also imporved from the free throw line from 83.3 percent in the first to 85.7 percent in the second.

Up next Emory hosts Maryville College (TN) on Saturday.


EMORY WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT AGAINST TENNESSEE TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

(Dec. 10) - The Emory women's basketball team won its fifth straight contest to move to 6-1 on year with a 73-64 victory Tennessee Temple University.

Leading Emory in scoring was Erica Kaplan with 15 points.  Also scoring in double digits were Lynn Oberschmidt with 12 points and Katie Bergfeld with 10 points.


EMORY WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT

(Dec. 7) - The Emory women's basketball team won its fourth straight contest to move to 5-1 on year with a 76-71 victory over previously unbeaten University of the South.

Leading Emory in scoring was Mackenzie Bisset with 16 points that included four three pointers.  Erica Kaplan notched 14 to provide scoring support.  For the game, Kaplan finished 3 of 4 from three-point range.

Post players Lora Turner and Lynn Oberschmidt finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.  Turner finished with a double-double, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.  Katie Bergfeld also provided support on the boards, pulling down eight.

Emory took command early in the contest, building as much as a 22 point lead in the first half and took a 51-34 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw Sewanee build a comeback, but getting no closer than the final deficit of five.

Emory continues its Tennessee road swing as it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., to face Tennessee Temple University on Saturday.


EMORY WINS THIRD STRAIGHT WITH VICTORY OVER LAGRANGE

(Dec. 3) - The Emory Eagles won their third straight contest Saturday with a 74-66 comeback victory over the LaGrange College Panthers.

Trailing 35-29 at the half, Emory came out and dominated the second half en route to the victory. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 45-31 during the final period.

Leading the way for the Eagles was senior Lynn Oberschmidt with 22 points and seven rebounds. Oberschmidt finished the game 10 of 12 from the floor and and 2 for 3 from the free throw line. Of her team-leading seven rebounds, four were defensive and three offensive.

Three fellow Eagles joined Oberschmidt in double figures with freshman Lora Turner scoring 11 and junior Beth Bergmann and senior Katie Bergfeld scoring 10 a piece.

Emory's improved play from the first half to the second had them shooting 69.3 percent from the floor in the second half compared to just 32 percent in the first. The Eagles now lead the all-time series with LaGrange five games to one.

Up next for Emory is a trip to the University of the South. Game-time is set for 6:00 p.m. CST.


EAGLES BLAST PIEDMONT COLLEGE 69-49

(Dec. 1) - The Emory women's basketball team won it's second-straight road game of the year and improved to 3-1 with a 69-49 stomping of Piedmont College. The Eagles jumped out to a 35-22 halftime lead and never looked back, outscoring their hosts by seven in the second half.

Beth Bergmann once again led the Eagles with 21 points. Bergmann finished the contest 7 of 13 shooting and 5 of 10 from three-point range. She was also 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Bergmann tallied four assists to help lead Emory to its first victory over Piedmont since December 14, 2002.

Katie Rizzo and Erica Kaplan also reached double figures with 10 points each. Rizzo was a perfect 5 of 5 from the field, while Kaplan was 4-5 and 2-2 from the charity stripe.

Freshman Lora Turner continued to lead the team in rebounds as she collected a team-leading six. Four of the rebounds were offensive. She also tallied five points.

Up next for Emory is a trip to LaGrange, Ga., where it will face LaGrange College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. The Eagles led the series with the Panthers four games to one, winning both contests last year by scores of 76-63 and 83-42.


EMORY EDGES PAST SPRING HILL

(Nov. 27) - The Emory Eagles spotted Spring Hill College a 19-point first half lead before coming back to claim a 54-53 road victory in Mobile, Ala., on Sunday.

Trailing 29-24 at the half the blue and gold wore down the Badgers in the second half to claim a 1-point victory to up the season record to 2-1. Emory avenges last season's 59-45 loss.

The Eagles continue their road swing with a trip to Demorest, Ga., to face Piedmont College, Thursday, Dec. 1. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m.


EAGLES FALL SHORT AGAINST OGLETHORPE 76-74

(Nov. 21) - The Emory women's basketball team lost its first game of the season Monday night to crosstown rival Oglethorpe University by a score of 76-74.

Trailing 36-25 at the half, the Eagles mounted a furious second-half rally, outscoring Oglethorpe 49-40. Emory cut the lead to three with 14 minutes to go at 45-42 on a MacKenzie Bisset jumper. From there the two rivals battled back and forth for much of the second half with OU building a 12 point lead again before the blue and gold made one last rally down the stretch.

Senior forward Lynn Oberschmidt led the way once again with 17 points. She was six of 10 from the field and five of six from the free throw line. She also dished out six assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Junior Beth Bergmann and freshman Lora Turner joined Oberschmidt in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Senior Katie Bergfeld led the team in rebounds with 13, while also scoring eight points.

Oglethorpe's Biz Richmann took game-high scoring honors with 18 to lead her team.

The Eagles return to action Sunday, Nov. 27 when they travel to Mobile, Ala., to face Spring Hill College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.


EMORY OPENS SEASON WITH VICTORY OVER BRIDGEWATER

(Nov. 18) - Senior Lynn Oberschmidt's 21 points led Emory University to a 68-58 victory in its season opener over Bridgewater College (VA).

Oberschmidt narrowly missed a "double-double" with her team-leading eight rebounds. Her 21 points marks the fifth time in her career she has scored 20 points or more in a game.

Oberschmidt has led Emory University in scoring in the last three season openers. She has scored 59 points in the first game of the past four seasons.

Junior Beth Bergmann scored 14 points including two three-point field goals. She has made a three-point field goal in 20 consecutive games dating back to December 30, 2004. Bergmann shot a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line. Last season, Bergamann was ranked fifth in the nation in free-throw percentage.

Four freshmen made their varsity basketball debut. Lora Turner scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds.

Freshmen Kate Corkle, Erica Kaplan, Kate Garrity and Kerry Madison also contributed to the Emory Eagles' win.

The Eagles victory improves their all-time home opener record to 14-4. Emory's 59.1 field goal percentage and 82.4 free-throw percentage in the second half contributed to the Eagles' victory after trailing at halftime 29-26.
