Emory Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Decision At Carnegie Mellon

Box Score

The Emory women's basketball team opened its second consecutive University Athletic Association road weekend with a tough overtime loss at Carnegie Mellon on Friday.  The Eagles slipped to 9-12 overall, 2-8 in the UAA following a 64-60 setback to CMU who upped its overall slate to 9-12, 2-8 in the league.

Emory sophomore Melissa Koike and junior Liz Brandt led a trio of double-figure scorers with 12 points apiece.  Sophomore guard Sally Peterson rounded out the group with 10 points.  Seniors Whitney Martin and Keenan Whitesides paced the Eagles with six rebounds each.

After falling behind by a 29-26 margin early in the second half, Emory put together a 16-7 scoring run, keyed by three-point field goals from sophomore Becca Feldman and Koike to take a 42-36 lead with 10:12 left in the contest. CMU countered with a 13-4 burst, capped when a bucket by Rachelle Roll gave it a slim 49-46 edge with 3:10 left on the clock.  The Eagles then recorded the next seven points, starting with a basket by Brandt, followed by a bucket by Peterson, a free throw by Courtney Von Stein and a basket by Martin to bolt to a 53-49 lead with 44 ticks on the clock.  The Eagles had opportunities to ice the game, but missed three free throws over the final 25 seconds allowing the Tartans to stay in the hunt.  Following an Emory miss with 11 seconds left, a three-pointer with six ticks left missed its mark but CMU's Jennifer Larsen  ended up  sinking a shot at the buzzer to send  the game into an extra session.

Back-to-back treys by the Tartans' Ali Aunkst gave the home team a 60-55 advantage with 2:54 left but a score by Brandt followed by a Feldman trey knotted the affair up with a minute to go.  After a charity toss gave CMU a one-point lead, Jessica Burnavosky scored to push the Tartans' cushion to three points, 63-60 with 27 seconds remaining.  Emory failed to score on its next possession while CMU added another free throw to close out the game's scoring.

Carnegie Mellon shot 47.2 percent from the field (25-of-53) while Emory checked in with a 34.8 percent effort (23-of-66).  CMU outrebounded the Eagles by a 47-29 margin with Roll snatching 22 boards.

The opening half was a closely played affair with the teams exchanging leads seven times. CMU took a 27-26 edge into the intermission as it shot a keen 55.0 percent from the floor (11-of-20).  Despite being hampered by 21 turnovers that led to 13 Emory points, the Tartans were able to hold the one-point lead thanks in part to a 21-7 bulge on the glass. The Eagles hit 34.6 percent of their field goal opportunities (9-of-26) and were led in scoring by Koike with seven points while Peterson chipped in six.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 14) when it plays at Case Western Reserve University.
