The Emory women's basketball team got off to a slow start Sunday
afternoon and couldn't make up for it as it came out on the short
end of a University Athletic Association game at Washington
University. The Eagles saw their overall record slip to 9-11,
2-7 in the UAA, following a 61-47 defeat to the No. 6-ranked Bears
who boosted their overall slate to 18-2, 8-1 in the conference.
Emory sophomore Danielle Landry led the Eagles with 11 points and
seven rebounds while senior Whitney Martin contributed nine points.
Emory shot 34.0 percent from the field (17-of-50) while Wash U.
connected on 36.2 percent (21-of-58). The Eagles were
hampered by cold three-point shooting as they were successful on
just one of 15 attempts from beyond the arc. The Bears closed
out the afternoon with a 47-35 edge in rebounding.
Wash U. established itself early in the contest, scoring the game's
first 13 points as the Eagles missed their first seven shots and
committed seven turnovers in the contest's opening nine minutes and
fourty one seconds. The Bears would go into halftime with a
36-10 advantage as they held Emory to 18.2 percent field goal
shooting (4-of-22) while hitting 43.3 percent (13-of-30) of their
attempts. The home team enjoyed a 24-14 edge in rebounding
during the opening 20 minutes of play with 12 of those boards
coming on the offensive end helping to a 16-2 bulge in second
chance points.
Wash U kept Emory at bay during the early stages of the second half
and eventually built its largest lead of the day, 46-15, with 12:26
left in the contest. The Eagles trailed by 27 points with
10:06 remaining on the clock before posting a 26-13 scoring
advantage over the final 8:02 of the game to account for the final
score.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 12) when it plays at
Carnegie Mellon.
