Emory Women's Basketball Drops Home Decision To Chicago

Emory  senior Whitney Martin scored 17 points and junior Liz Brandt tied her career high with 16 points but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell to the University of Chicago Friday evening.  Emory saw its record slip to 9-8 overall, 2-4 in the University Athletic Association following an 80-70 setback to the Maroons who upped their overall ledger to 13-4, 5-1 in the UAA.

Chicago ended the contest shooting 51 percent from the floor (25-of-49) while the Eagles finished with a 40.6 percent effort (26-of-64). UC held a big edge at the foul line, hitting 24-of-33 opportunities while Emory converted 12-of-16.  The Maroon enjoyed an edge in the rebounding department as well, finishing with a 40-26 bulge on the glass.

Emory trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, 22-13, with 7:58 remaining in the stanza before using a 10-2 run, sparked by four points by Brandt, to narrow the gap to one point with 4:30 left.  After Chicago upped its lead to seven points, Emory made another late charge to draw to within two points, 32-30, with 42 seconds left on the clock.  However, Chicago scored the stanza's final five points to take a 37-30 lead at the intermission.  Brandt scored 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play, hitting all four of her field goal tries and both of her free throws.

Chicago held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half and led by a 17-point cushion with 13:08 left. Following a jumper by Martin, Emory trailed by 11 points with 8:26 on the clock, only to see the visitors pull away to go ahead by 18 points with 4:26 remaining.  A late charge by the Eagles saw them draw to within eight points with 29 ticks on the scoreboard.

Brandt ended the evening hitting seven-of-12 from the floor while Martin sank six-of-13 floor attempts.  Sophomore guard Sally Peterson rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 15 points.  Chicago's Meghan Herrick led all players with 20 points.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 31) when it hosts No. 3-ranked Washington University in a 2:00 p.m. start.
