Emory senior Whitney Martin scored 17 points and junior
Liz Brandt tied her career high with 16 points but it wasn't enough
as the Eagles fell to the University of Chicago Friday
evening. Emory saw its record slip to 9-8 overall, 2-4 in the
University Athletic Association following an 80-70 setback to the
Maroons who upped their overall ledger to 13-4, 5-1 in the UAA.
Chicago ended the contest shooting 51 percent from the floor
(25-of-49) while the Eagles finished with a 40.6 percent effort
(26-of-64). UC held a big edge at the foul line, hitting 24-of-33
opportunities while Emory converted 12-of-16. The Maroon
enjoyed an edge in the rebounding department as well, finishing
with a 40-26 bulge on the glass.
Emory trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, 22-13,
with 7:58 remaining in the stanza before using a 10-2 run, sparked
by four points by Brandt, to narrow the gap to one point with 4:30
left. After Chicago upped its lead to seven points, Emory
made another late charge to draw to within two points, 32-30, with
42 seconds left on the clock. However, Chicago scored the
stanza's final five points to take a 37-30 lead at the
intermission. Brandt scored 10 points in the opening 20
minutes of play, hitting all four of her field goal tries and both
of her free throws.
Chicago held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second
half and led by a 17-point cushion with 13:08 left. Following a
jumper by Martin, Emory trailed by 11 points with 8:26 on the
clock, only to see the visitors pull away to go ahead by 18 points
with 4:26 remaining. A late charge by the Eagles saw them
draw to within eight points with 29 ticks on the scoreboard.
Brandt ended the evening hitting seven-of-12 from the floor while
Martin sank six-of-13 floor attempts. Sophomore guard Sally
Peterson rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 15
points. Chicago's Meghan Herrick led all players with 20
points.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 31) when it hosts No.
3-ranked Washington University in a 2:00 p.m. start.
