Emory Women's Basketball Battles NYU & Brandeis In UAA Road Action

GAME FACTS - After notching a pair of non-conference wins last week, the Emory women's basketball squad gears up for a pair of University Athletic Association road contests.  On Friday (Jan. 22), the Eagles tangle with NYU in a 6:00 p.m. tip before closing out the weekend with a Sunday afternoon encounter at Brandeis which is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.

THE COACHES - Emory Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty (Tulane, '96) is in her seventh season at the helm of the program.  She assumed her current duties prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign. 

Stefano Trompeo (Florida, 2003) is in his second year as the head coach at New York University.  During his tenure, he has compiled an overall slate of 31-11 that includes a 23-5 record last season.

In her 23rd campaign at the helm of the Brandeis program is Carol Simon (Colby, 1985).  Heading into the weekend, Simon has 329 school and career victories and has guided the Judges to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

2009-10 RECORDS - Emory returns to league action with an overall record of 8-6, 1-2 in the UAA.  The Eagles closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a pair of victories last week, defeating Piedmont College, 67-61, at the Woodruff PE Center before registering a 68-64 overtime win at Agnes Scott.

NYU welcomes Emory into the Coles Sports Center with an overall record of 8-6.  The Violets will be seeking their first conference win as they stand 0-3 in the loop. Last weekend, NYU lost at Chicago (71-61) and at Washington University (70-50).

Brandeis heads into a Friday evening home affair against Rochester with a won-lost mark of 8-5 that includes a 1-2 UAA effort.  The Judges came out on the short end of road contests at Washington University (67-57) and Chicago (74-61) last weekend.

SERIES RECORDS - NYU holds a 32-9 advantage in the all-time series with Emory.  The Violets won both games last season, 66-59 at Emory and 71-60 on their home floor.

Emory owns a slim 21-20 margin in the series with Brandeis.  The Eagles and Judges split last year's meetings with Emory claiming a 69-56 win at home and Brandeis registering a 67-57 triumph at Red Auberbach Arena.  Brandeis stands 11-9 vs. Emory in games played on its home floor.

EMORY DUO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS - Coach Thomaskutty has announced that seniors Whitney Martin (Barrington, IL) and Keenan Whitesides (Wilmington, NC) will serve as captains of 2009-10 Emory squad.

MARTIN NAMED UAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Whitney Martin was named UAA Player of the Week for the second time this year following her efforts in helping the Eagles to wins over Piedmont College and Agnes Scott, averaging 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in the two games. 

In the 67-61 triumph over Piedmont College (Jan.14), the 6-foot Martin recorded her third double-double of the year when she recorded 11 points (second high on the team) and a team-high 10 rebounds.  In addition, she also recorded four blocked shots and a pair of steals.  In a 68-64 overtime win at Agnes Scott on Saturday, Martin paced the Eagles with a career-high tying 19 points while snatching a team-best seven boards.

MARTIN AMONG UAA LEADERS - Whitney Martin continues to pace the team in a number of statistical categories while maintaining a presence among UAA leaders. 
Martin's team-high 12.7 per-game scoring average is sixth on the league's chart while her 7.1 per-game effort in rebounding ties for the No. 5 position in the conference.  In addition, Martin has connected on 44.8 percent of her field goal opportunities which places her second on the squad and 11th in the loop.

Martin has led the club in scoring in five games and has paced the team in rebounding on eight occasions.  She has scored in double figures in 12 games this year, and has picked off six or more rebounds in nine affairs.

NOTES - Junior Courtney Von Stein led the team in scoring for the second straight game when she notched a season-high tying 12 points against Piedmont College ... Sophomore Becca Feldman turned in her biggest offensive performance as an Eagle, picking up a career-best 16 points against Agnes Scott ... Feldman sank seven-of-12 from the floor, including a pair of three-point field goals en route to her eighth double-figure scoring game of the campaign ... Feldman will enter the NYU contests with treys to her credit in her last four outings ...  Whitney Martin tops the team and is ninth among UAA players in steals (1.9 spg) and has thefts in her last eight games ...  Martin has recorded 77 blocked shots during her career, third on the Emory all-time chart and two shy of tying Stephanie Seibert (2000-04) for second place ...Freshman Danielle Landry pulled down seven rebounds against Piedmont, her eighth game of six or more boards this season ...  Landry is third on the squad and 20th in the UAA with a 5.6 per-game effort in rebounding ... Keenan Whitesides holds down the No. 2 spot on the team's score sheet with  a 9.9 per-game scoring average, good for 17th place in the conference, while her 48.4 percent mark from the field leads the club and ranks seventh in the UAA ... Whitesides has produced seven double-figure scoring performances this year ... Junior Liz Brandt came through with a career-best 16 points against Agnes Scott, her second double-figure contest this year ... Emory is 8-1 this season leading at
halftime, 0-5 when trailing at the break ... The Eagles have converted 20 or more free throws in three contests this year and post a 3-0 mark in those affairs ... Emory has outscored the opposition in 15 of 28 halves ... Emory finished with 11 steals against Agnes Scott, bringing the team's total to seven this season of double-figure steals ...
