Emory University senior Whitney Martin
(Barrington, IL) has been selected by the University Athletic
Association as Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her
efforts in a pair of victories. It marks the second
time this season and in her career that she has won the award.
The 6-foot Martin averaged 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks
and 2.0 steals in helping the Eagles to a pair of non-conference
wins. In a 67-61 triumph over Piedmont College (Jan.14), the
6-foot Martin recorded her third double-double of the year when she
recorded 11 points (second high on the team) and a team-high 10
rebounds. In addition, she also recorded four blocked shots
and a pair of steals. In a 68-64 overtime win at Agnes Scott
on Saturday, Martin paced the Eagles with a career-high tying 19
points while snatching a team-best seven boards. Martin came
through in a big way during the overtime session, scoring nine
points as she notched her 12th double-figure scoring
performance of the season.
Martin has led the squad in scoring in five games this year and has
been Emory's leading rebounder on eight occasions. In games
played through Jan. 17, her team-high 12.7 points per-game average
ranks sixth in the UAA while her 7.1 per-game average in rebounding
ties her for the No. 5 position. Other categories where she
ranks among the conference's leaders includes field goal percentage
(11th, .448), steals (t-7th, 1.9 spg) and
blocked shots (7th, 1.0 bpg).
Emory, 8-6 overall, 1-2 in the UAA, returns to action on Friday
(Jan. 22) when it plays at New York University in a 6:00 p.m. tip.
