Emory Women's Basketball Falls To No. 7 Chicago

Senior Dana Kaplan came off the bench to score 19 points and paced five five-double figure scorers as the University of Chicago women’s basketball team defeated Emory on Sunday.  The No. 7-ranked Chicago squad raised its overall record to 19-3, 11-0 in the University Athletic Association, following an 81-62 triumph over the Eagles who slipped to 9-13 overall, 2-9 in the league.

Chicago, which never trailed in the game, shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor, including 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range, compared to Emory’s mark of 34.4 percent (21-of-61).  The Maroons converted 19-of-24 from the charity stripe while the Eagles were hampered by 12-of-27 shooting from the foul line.  UC posted a wide 49-28 edge on the glass.

Emory junior Becca Feldman came off the bench and registered a team-high 14 points, tying her season high.  Feldman hit five-of-nine from the floor, including a pair of three pointers, and both of her free throw opportunities en route to her fifth double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Freshman Selena Castillo also finished in double digits with 11 points while also doling out four assists and coming up with three steals in 22 minutes of action.  Sophomore Danielle Landry led the squad in rebounding for the fifth straight game with six boards.

Emory faced a 14-point deficit with 7:10 left in the opening half before going on a 7-0 run, keyed by three-point field goals by Feldman and junior Emily Hyncik, to cut the gap to seven points, 27-20, with 6:06 left in the stanza. The Eagles were down eight points with 1:32 remaining but the Maroons closed out the half on a 7-0 run that gave them a 47-32 lead at halftime.

UC opened the second half on a 12-2 burst that extended its advantage to 25 points, 59-34, with 16:03 remaining in the contest. From there, the visitors were able to maintain a 20-point cushion for most of the remainder of the game.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 18) when it plays at Case Western.
