Emory Women's Basketball Defeated By Chicago

Emory Women's Basketball Defeated By Chicago

Freshman Savannah Morgan scored a team-high 13 points and dished out a season-high nine assists but it wasn’t enough as the Emory women’s basketball came out on the short end of a road game at the University of Chicago.  The Eagles saw their overall record fall to 7-7 (0-3 University Athletic Association) following a 92-75 setback to the Maroons who upped their overall slate to 11-3 (3-0 UAA).

Morgan hit six-of-11 from the field, including her lone three-point attempt, en route to her fifth double-figure scoring performance of the year.  She was one of four Eagles to finish in double digits with junior Becca Feldman (12 pts.), junior Melissa Koike (11 pts.) and freshman Hannah Lilly (11 pts.) the other Emory players to post double figures.

Chicago finished the day hitting 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the floor compared to Emory’s 38.7 percent (24-of-62).  The Eagles sank nine-of-27 from beyond the arc with Feldman and freshman Shantel Houston each draining three from distance.  Houston finished with nine points.  The Maroons enjoyed a decisive 45-27 bulge in rebounding and were paced in that department by Taylor Simpson who snared 13 boards while totaling a game-high 22 points.

Emory got out of the gates slowly, missing its first nine shots from the floor while Chicago converted eight-of-10 as the Maroons bolted out to a 21-1 lead with 14:15 left in the opening half of play.  The Eagles steadied themselves and cut the deficit to 14 points on three occasions over the remainder of the stanza, the final occasion with 1:57 remaining following a jumper by Lilly.  Chicago shot a blazing 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the field during the opening 20 minutes of play in taking a 51-34 lead into halftime.

Chicago opened the second half on an 11-3 spurt to open a 25-point cushion with 15:54 left on the clock. After shooting just 33.3 percent in the first half, Emory picked up in the second stanza, converting 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from the floor over the final half including 35.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 21) when it makes its home UAA debut against Case Western in a 6:00 p.m. start.
