Emory Women's Basketball Posts Fifth Straight Win -- Defeats Case

Sophomore Hannah Lilly scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the second half and junior Misha Jackson added 10 points along with a career-high 14 rebounds in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a win over Case Western Reserve in a University Athletic Association game.  The Eagles notched their fifth straight win and upped their overall record to 13-3 (4-1 UAA) following a 68-56 verdict over the Spartans who slipped to 8-8, 1-4 in the league.

Lilly sank eight-of-16 of her field goal opportunities, including a pair of three-point field goals, and converted all six of her free throw attempts in notching her 15th double-figure scoring game of the season and eighth of 20 or more points.  After sinking just two of her first seven field goal attempts in the first half, she knocked down six-of-nine from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play.  She also closed out the afternoon with five rebounds and five steals, her 10th outing of multiple thefts this year.   Lilly has totaled 20 or more points in her last four games, the longest streak by an Emory player since Mandy Jackson rattled off eight consecutive contests in 1992 (Jan. 23 – Feb. 7, 1992).

In addition to Jackson's scoring total, junior Danielle Landry also finished in double figures in the scoring column with a season-high tying 13 points, sinking six-of-eight from the field along with one free throw.

After falling behind by a 7-6 margin in the early stages of the game, Landry accounted for six of Emory's 11 straight points that put it up by a 17-7 margin with 13:36 left in the first half.  After a basket by CWRU's Erin Hollinger, who would lead the Spartans' scoring attack with 16 points, cut the Emory advantage to seven points, six different players scored during an Eagles' 10-0 blitz that pushed their cushion to 17 points, 30-13, with 5:49 left.  A three pointer by Becca Feldman with 3:38 left in the stanza kept Emory in front by a healthy 16-point margin, but the Spartans closed out the half on an 8-2 spurt that cut the Eagles' lead to 35-25 at halftime.

A triple by Lilly early in the second half, gave Emory a 40-29 advantage, but Case battled back into contention on the strength of an 11-0 spree that knotted the contest at 40-40 with 13:18 on the clock.   Back-to-back baskets by Lilly, followed by a bucket by Savannah Morgan, accounted for a 6-0 run that enabled the Eagles to take a 46-40 edge.  Sophomore Selena Castillo's jumper with  9:10 left kept Emory ahead by six points, but a 10-1 burst, capped by a three-pointer by Rachel Beaty, put the Spartans ahead by a 52-49 margin with 6:04 on the clock.  However, Emory reclaimed control of the game from that point, thanks to a solid defensive stand that held the visitors scoreless for the next five minutes while scoring nine straight points to take a 58-52 lead.  After a pair of Case charity tosses cut its deficit to four points, the Eagles closed out the final 1:03 of the game on a 10-2 run with the squad hitting all eight of their free throw attempts including six by Lilly.

For the game, Emory hit on 39.3 percent (24-of-61) of its field goal tries compared to CWRU's 31.1 percent (19-of-61).  The Spartans did manage to outrebound Emory by a slim 42-40 margin but 20 they were hampered by 20 turnovers that led to a 23-12 Emory advantage in the points off turnover category.  The Eagles finished wirh 13 steals, the team's sixth straight contest of 10 or more thefts.

Emory's win this afternoon enabled it to tie the 1994-95 team for the best 16-game record in school annals.

The Eagles return to action next Friday (Feb. 27) when it plays at the University of Chicago.
