Emory Women's Basketball Drops Home Game To No. 2 Chicago

The No. 2-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team remained undefeated Friday evening as it captured a victory over Emory in University Athletic Association action.  The Maroons boosted their overall record to 19-0, 8-0 in the UAA, following a 79-55 verdict over the Eagles who slipped to 13-6 in overall play, 4-4 in the league.

Junior Danielle Landry led the Emory offensive attack with 12 points, her second straight and seventh game of the year with double-digit scoring.  Landry also tied senior Melissa Koike for team honors with five rebounds.  Senior Becca Feldman was the squad's other double-figure scorer, coming off the bench to register 11 points.

The Eagles concluded the evening shooting 34.7 percent (25-of-72) from the floor while the visiting Chicago unit checked in at 48.6 percent (34-of-70).  Neither team shot well from three-point range with Emory registering a season-low 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from beyond the arc while the Maroons weren't much better at 16.7 percent (3-of-18).  UC did enjoy a healthy 53-33 edge in the rebounding department with Hannah Bullard picking off 11 caroms to go along with her 16 points.

Emory trailed by a 14-12 margin midway through the first half but saw Chicago score nine unanswered points, capped by a trey by Bryanne Halfhill, to post a 23-11 advantage left in the stanza.  The Eagles stayed within nine points at 27-18 following a bucket by sophomore Hannah Lilly but the Maroons closed out the final 3:58 of the half on a 13-7 spurt to claim a 40-25 lead at the intermission.

A pair of baskets by sophomore Savannah Morgan helped Emory score the first six points of the second half and draw to within nine points, but UC countered with a 9-0 blitz that pushed its cushion to 18 points, 49-31, with 16:57 remaining.   Trailing by a 51-33 count, Emory mounted a comeback bid with a 10-2 run, with Feldman scoring the final eight points in that stretch, to slice the Maroon lead to 53-43 with 13:50 on the clock.   However, that was as close as Emory would get as UC responded by scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points to build its lead back to 18 points, 63-45, with 10:37 left.  Senior Taylor Simpson paced four UC double-figure scorers with a game-high 18 points with classmate Morgan Herrick adding 17 points.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 5) when it hosts No.  8 Washington University  in a 2:00 p.m. start.
