Emory Women's Basketball Battles To Win Over Brandeis

Emory Women's Basketball Battles To Win Over Brandeis

Junior Danielle Landry scored a team-high 12 points while classmate Misha Jackson totaled her sixth double of the year with  10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a win over Brandeis University on Sunday.  The Eagles captured their third straight victory and upped their overall record to 16-6, 7-4 in the University Athletic Association with a 53-48 decision over the Judges who slipped to 8-14 overall, 1-10 in the conference.

Brandeis held a 28-25 lead at halftime as it limited Emory to just 25 percent from the floor.  The Eagles held a 14-8 lead with 10:54 left in the stanza following a three-point field goal by senior Emily Hyncik, but BU responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a bucket by Shannon Hassan, that pushed the visitors to a 20-14 advantage with 5:53 left.  Emory still trailed by a 23-17 count with 4:29 left  before free throws by sophomore Hannah Lilly, followed by buckets from Jackson and senior Melissa Koike knotted things at 23-23.   A pair of charity tosses by Hassan gave the Judges a 28-23 edge but a basket by Jackson with two seconds left closed out the scoring for the half.

Brandeis led by six points early in the second stanza and maintained a 35-32 margin before triples by Koike and Lilly keyed an 8-2 Emory charge that enabled it to post a 40-37 edge with 9:58 left in the contest.  Following a bucket by BU's Hannah Cain, the Judges nudged ahead by a 42-40 score after Morgan Kendrew sank a three-pointer.  After Jackson a score tied the game, the Eagles went ahead for good with 6:37 on the clock when Koike knocked down a trey.   Brandeis would get within one point on a couple of occasions from there but the Eagles held off those comeback  bids in securing the win.

Both teams had trouble finding the mark from the floor with Emory finishing the afternoon with a 31.1 percent (19-of-61) showing compared to Brandeis' mark of 28.6 percent (16-of-55).  The Eagles managed to sink seven three-pointers with Lilly and Koike each picking up three.   The Judges did enjoy  a 55-34 bulge on the glass but Emory's defense harassed BU into 27 turnovers.  The Eagles picked up 15 steals, their 16th outing of double figures in that category this season and were led by Jackson's six thefts.  Lilly and Koike each added 11 points in the win.

Emory's 16 victories represent the program's highest total since the 1998-99 season when that club finished with a 16-9 ledger.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 17) when it plays at Carnegie Mellon in a 6:00 p.m. start.
