No. 16 Emory Women's Basketball To Battle Rochester For UAA Title

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team has placed itself in a position to capture the program's first-ever University Athletic Association title when it battles the University of Rochester on Saturday (Feb. 23).  The Woodruff PE Center on the Emory campus will serve as the site for the 49th meeting between the Eagles and Yellowjackets and tip is set for 2:00 pm.

THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty (Tulane, '96) is in her 10th season in charge of the Eagles.  She assumed her current duties prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign and enters the weekend with a school and career mark of 128-121.  She is assisted by Katherine Menendez, Kim Coleman, Jessica Davis, Chelsea MacDonald and Brittany Graham.

Jim Scheible (Clarkson, '88) is in his 14th year at the helm of the Rochester program and heads into Saturday's contest with a school won-lost ledger of 275-110, which includes his directing the Yellowjackets to eight NCAA Tournament appearances. In 22 seasons as a head coach Scheible claims a career record of 416-181.

2012-13 RECORDS – Emory, ranked No. 16 in both this week's USA Today Sports and  D3hoops.com Polls, stands 21-3 in overall play, including an 11-2 slate in the UAA, good for a first-place tie with Rochester.  Last Friday, the Eagles scrapped to a 62-61 overtime decision against Case Western before chalking up a 76-55 decision over Carnegie Mellon, raising the team's home record to 13-1 on the year.   Emory will meet Rochester with a four-game winning streak under its belt.

The Eagles' 21-3 record represents the best 24-game showing in school history, bettering the 19-5 ledger posted by the 1994-95 squad while the victory total ties the school mark for most wins in a campaign.

Rochester comes to town with an overall record of 19-5, 11-2 in the UAA.  The Yellowjackets will invade the Woodpec on a roll having won their last four outings. Last weekend, UR edged Carnegie Mellon, 72-67, and Case Western, 72-68.  The Yellowjackets are 8-2 in road/neutral affairs this season.

SERIES RECORDS – In a series that began in 1989, Rochester stands 27-21 all-time against Emory.  The Eagles did capture the first meeting of this season, a wild 73-67 double-overtime outcome that saw them overcome a nine-point second-half deficit. The junior tandem of Hannah Lilly and Savannah Morgan each recorded 17 points to pace the team's scoring attack while senior Danielle Landry chipped in 13 points along with a team-high nine boards.  Emory has won 13 of the 25 games against Rochester played on its home court.

EMORY DUO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS
– Serving as captains of the 2012-13 Emory
women's basketball team are seniors Misha Jackson (Atlanta, GA) and Danielle Landry (Vienna, VA).  The pair also served as captains, along with the graduated Melissa Koike, during the 2011-12 season. 

EMORY'S DEFENSE MAKE AN IMPACT – Heading into the weekend, the Eagles hold down the No. 1 spot in the UAA (72nd nationally) in scoring defense in overall (53.9 ppg) and  league encounters (56.2 ppg).   Emory has held opponents to fewer than 50 points on eight occasions including a Jan. 25 game when the 28 points scored by Brandies tied the seventh-lowest opponent total against an Emory squad. 

The high-energy Emory defense forced both Case and Carnegie Mellon into 32 turnovers each with the Eagles parlaying those miscues into a total of 72 points (26 pts. vs Case, 46 vs. Carnegie Mellon).

Emory has forced the opposition into 20 or more turnovers in 14 of the last 15 and  in a total of 21 games this season.  The Eagles are averaging 25.8 points off opponent mistakes while foes are scoring 11.5 points off Emory turnovers.  Emory continues to lead the UAA, while ranking 11th among D-III programs,  in steals (14.8 spg) and holds down the No. 1 position in the conference (6th nationally) in turnover margin (+10.2). 

Emory has been especially stingy on the defensive end of the floor in its 13 home outings, allowing the opposition just 48.8 points while limiting foes to just .336 percent from the floor.

JACKSON COMING UP BIG DOWN THE STRETCH – Senior Misha Jackson has been a workhorse on the glass for Emory down the homestretch of the regular season, either leading or sharing for team honors in rebounding in the last seven and in 10 of the last 12 contests. 

After tying classmate Danielle Landry for the team's lead with nine caroms vs. Case Western, Jackson chalked up her UAA-leading eighth double-double of the campaign and 17th of her career with a game-high 19 points and game-leading 12 boards vs. Carnegie Mellon. Heading into the weekend, she has either led or tied for team honors in rebounding on 17 occasions this year.  Her performance against the Tartans represented her 10th effort double-figure rebounding this season and the 21st of her career.  

Jackson will check into the Rochester game as the UAA's leading rebounder in both overall (9.2 rpg) and league (9.0 rpg) and has registered eight or more caroms on 15 occasions this year.   Her 3.5 per-game mark in offensive rebounds is No. 2 in the league and she is third in defensive rebounds with a per-game showing of 5.7

A double-figure scorer in 17 games this season, Jackson finds herself second on the club and eighth among UAA players in scoring average (11.5 ppg) while her team-high 47.5 percent mark (113-of-228) also stands eighth on the league ladder.  She has shot 50 percent or better from the floor in 11 contests and over the last four games is connecting at a 60.6 percent (20-of-33) clip.  Jackson tops the Eagles and is third in the loop in blocked shots with a 1.6 per-game effort and has rejections to her credit in 11 of the last 13 games, six of which have been multiple-block performances.

Career-wise, Misha is firmly entrenched in a number of school categories including scoring (12th, 864 pts.), field goals (9th, 367), rebounds (11th, 588), blocked shots (2nd, 90), and steals (8th, 133).

FIRST-YEAR PLAYERS ARE KEY IN WINS vs. CASE & CARNEGIE MELLON – A trio of first-year players played key roles over the weekend in helping the Eagles to wins over Case and Carnegie Mellon.  Freshman Ilene Tsao scored all five of her points in the overtime session against Case while classmate Khadijah Sayyid recorded six points during the game in the 62-61 overtime victory. 

Sayyid followed the Case effort by sinking all three of her three-point attempts en route to scoring nine points, her second-highest total of the campaign, in the Carnegie Mellon game.   Junior Marissa Resnick gave the team a boost by scoring six points on the strength of a pair of three pointers while also doling out three assists in 13 minutes of action.

CASTILLO'S CAPERS --  Junior Selena Castillo keeps moving up the Emory ladder for most steals in a season, with her five thefts over the weekend boosting her mark to 70, good for the No. 2 spot on that list.  

A starter in all 24 games, Castillo closed out the Carnegie Mellon game with three thefts, her 19th effort this season with two or more steals.  Heading into Saturday's tilt, Castillo tops the UAA and is 77th nationally in steals with a 2.9 per-game average.   In addition, she holds down the No. 6 position on the league chart with a .375 three-point field goal percentage effort (30-of-80).

 Career-wise, her 136 thefts rank seventh all-time at the school.

LANDRY IN SELECT COMPANYDanielle Landry is just one of two players in Emory women's basketball history to rank among the program's all-time top 10 in both rebounding and steals. 

Landry's 592 career boards ties her with Nytasha Thoms ((1991-95) for ninth place on the school's all-time chart while her 173 steals is good for the No. 4 slot on that list, just three shy of moving into third.   During her career, Landry owns 13 contests of 10 or more boards, four of which have come during this season. 

The 6-foot Landry is second on the team behind Misha Jackson and tied for 10th in the league in rebounding (6.1 rpg) in overall play while her 6.2 per-game showing in conference tilts stands 11th.   She has either led or tied for the team's lead in rebounding in eight contests.

LILLY A 1,000-POINT SCORER--   Junior Hannah Lilly became the program's eighth-ever 1,000-point scorer in the Chicago (Feb. 10) game and she will head into the Rochester contest with 1,024 career points.  

Lilly is coming off a 15-point afternoon against Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, her best offensive showing since a 19-point outing against NYU on Feb. 27.  She sank 6-of-11 from the floor against the Tartans, including three three-point field goals, her 15th performance of two or more triples this season.  Her 50 treys this year are the seventh-highest mark is school history and Hannah will enter the Rochester affair second in the league in three pointers per game (2.2 tpg).

Lilly set a school record with 26 straight games with a three-point field with that streak beginning on Feb. 5, 2012 and ending on Feb. 8, 2013.

A double-figure scorer in 17 games this year, she paces the team and is fourth in the UAA in scoring (13.1 ppg).  She is also sixth in the conference in three-point percentage (.342) and 11th in assists (2.4 apg). 

The owner of the No. 7 slot on the school's career list with 384 field goals, she is firmly entrenched in the No. 2 position with 165 three-point field goals.  So far during her two-plus year career at Emory, she has recorded 53 games of double-digit point production and claims 13 contests of 20 or more points.

MORGAN DIRECTS THE ATTACK – Savannah Morgan came through with a solid all-around effort in the win over Case, leading all players with 16 points while dishing out seven assists and registering a career-high six steals.  It represented Morgan's 14th double-figure scoring performance of the season and the seventh time she had chalked up seven or more assists in a game. 

Morgan is tied for the top spot in the UAA with a 5.3 per-game assists average in overall play while her 5.0 per-game effort in conference affairs is second.  In addition, she is tied for first in the league with a 1.7 mark in assist/turnover ratio. 

Heading into the weekend, Morgan is scoring at an 11.5 per-game clip, second on the squad and sixth in the UAA.  After establishing a school season record with 142 assists last year, Morgan has rang up 126 so far this year 'in '12-13, good for third place on the Emory list. 

Her 722 points ranks 18th on the Emory career scoring chart and she stands third all-time at the school with 373 assists and is sixth in steals (138).

NOTES – Emory's 152 three-point field goals is the second-highest seasonal mark in school annals,  behind only the 175 triples that the '11-12 team  recorded … The Eagles are averaging a league-leading 6.3 three-point field goals per game and have converted seven or more treys in 12 contests this season … Emory's 10 three-pointers against Carnegie Mellon  was the fourth time this year it finished in double digits … The Eagles' 14.8 steals per game currently stands as a school seasonal mark, bettering the 12.2 per-game effort by the 2010-11 club … Over the last three games,  Emory is outscoring the opposition by a 72.7-60.3 per-game margin … In the last three games, the Eagles are averaging 31.0 points off opponent turnovers … Emory has already set a school record for most steals in a season with its 355 thefts surpassing the previous standard  of 305 set by the 2010-11 squad … The Eagles turned the ball over a season-low six times in the Chicago game (Feb. 10) , the best effort recorded by a Thomaskutty-coached Eagle team … Emory has enjoyed an edge in the points-off-turnover category on 21 occasions with the opposition finishing with the advantage in two contests (one game tied) … Emory is shooting .324 from three-point range in home (95-of-293) games while closing out the regular season with a .317 mark (57-of-180) on the road … Emory's +17.3 scoring margin paces the UAA and is good for 21st place among D-III programs … Emory is averaging 35.1 points during the first half of action and 34.8 points during the second half … Opponents are averaging 25.2 points in the first half and 27.6 in the second stanza …  The Eagles are 33-4 during Thomaskutty's tenure as head coach when scoring 80 or more points (6-0 in 2012-13) ...
