Emory Women's Basketball Selected To Host First & Second Round NCAA Tournament Games

The No. 16-ranked Emory women's basketball team, fresh off of capturing the program's first-ever University Athletic Association championship, has been selected as a host site for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Eagles of head coach Christy Thomaskutty will battle Whitworth College on Friday (Mar. 1) at the Woodruff PE Center at a time to be determined.  The other first-round matchup will see Huntingdon College battle Ferrum College.  The winners advance to Saturday's second round.

Emory checks into Friday's game with an overall record of 22-3, with the win total representing the most wins in school history.  Head coach Christy Thomaskutty and her squad have captured 14 of 15 home games this season and finished off the regular season as the UAA leader in scoring defense (54.0 ppg), scoring margin (+16.9 ppg), three-point field goals per game (6.2 tpg), turnover margin (+9.88) and steals (14.7 spg).  This weekend will represent the first time since 1997 that an Emory team has advanced to the post season.

A member of the Northwest Conference, Whitworth heads into the postseason with a mark of 21-6. The Pirates earned their second-ever trip to the NCAAs following a 76-61 triumph over Lewis and Clark College (Ore.) in the finals of the NWC tournament championship.

Ferrum College sports an overall ledger of 24-4 and landed an at-large bid to this year's tournament.  The Panthers tied for the USA South regular season championship (16-2) but lost in the finals of the conference championship to Christopher Newport.

Huntingdon College will be making its initial foray into the NCAA Tournament after upending Salem College, 73-61, in the Great South Athletic Conference title contest on Sunday.  The Hawks enter the postseason with wins in 11 of their last 12 games that has brought its record to 17-9.
