Emory Women's Basketball Announces Commitments For 2013-14

Emory head women's basketball coach Christy Thomaskutty has announced that the following student-athletes will be attending Emory in the fall and be competing for the 2013-14 Eagles' program.

"While we lost some quality players from this past season, we believe that this year's incoming class definitely meets some of the needs we have," Thomaskutty said. "These young ladies are quality people as well as quality players, and both the coaching staff and our returning veterans are excited about their joining the program."

Michelle Bevan ( 5-10, Missouri City, Tex./Clements HS)  -- Four-year member of the  basketball program at Clements High School where she was coached by Clint Watts her final campaign … Served as her team's captain her junior and senior seasons … Tossed in 12 points and grabbed 6.0 rebounds per contest her final year en route to claiming 23-5A All District First-Team honors … Chosen team MVP as a senior … Captured second-team recognition on district teams her sophomore and junior years … Closed out her prep career as just one of three CHS three players to score 1,000 or more points … Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Academic All-State honoree … Academic All-District all four years … AP Scholar with Honor … Member of the National Honor Society …

Shelby Zucker (5-9, Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale HS) – Four-year member of the basketball program at Scarsdale High School where she played for coach Mike Blanco … Served as her team captain during the 2012-13 campaign … Averaged 18.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per outing as a senior with her scoring effort ranking second among Class AA players for the second straight season … Garnered berths on section, league and state teams her final season … Honorable- mention pick to section and league squads her junior year … Selected to the 2013 USA Maccabiah Juniors Team … In her final regular-season home game, she posted a career-best 32 points and in the process became the school's fifth player to reach 1,000 career points … Posted a scoring average of 19.0 points per outing as a junior … Recipient of the Con Ed Scholar Athlete Award for the 2012-13 school year … Played varsity tennis for three years.

Shellie Kaniut (5-8, Vienna, VA/McLean HS) –  Played four seasons for the McLean High School program where she was coached by Mike O'Brien … Team co-captain her junior and senior seasons … Averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest her final year in helping her squad to an 18-8 regular-season record … Second Team All-Liberty District her final two campaigns … As a junior, she averaged 10.4 points and 3.6 boards per game … Also played on the volleyball team. 

Fran Sweeney
(5-4, Norristown, PA/Germantown Academy) – Four-year member of the Germantown Academy basketball team where she played for coach Sherri Retif …  Team captain as a senior … Helped her squad to three Inter-Academic League titles and PAISSA state championships her freshman and sophomore years … In 2012-13, GA advanced to the title contest in the state tournament … The 2012-13 recipient of the girl's Inter-AC League Athletic Directors' Award, presented to a senior who has been a multi-sport varsity athlete who has exemplified dedication to her school and team, while also displaying sportsmanship and leadership … Second Team All-Inter AC honoree as a senior and ranked among the top 20 performers in three-point field goals in all of Southeastern Pennsylvania  … GA's Markward Award winner as a senior for sportsmanship and play on the court … As a junior, she captured her school's McNeil Patriot Scholar Award … Four-year starter on GA's soccer team, scoring 20 goals during her career,  and was a three-year member of the track and field team. 

Cassy Stafford (6-1, Chapel Hill, NC/Cary Academy) – Competed four years on the basketball team at Cary Academy where she was coached by Mike Zeillman as a senior … Served as her team's captain her senior season … Was a force on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor, averaging 8.0 rebounds, 9.0 blocks and contributing 9.5 points per contest … Helped her club to a conference title along with an overall record of 23-5 her final campaign … Recipient of CA's Coaches Award as a senior … As a junior she posted per-game averages of 6.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocks … Headmasters Honor Roll all four years. 

Patricia Mook (6-0, Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls HS) – Four-year member of the basketball program at Potomac Falls High School … Played for head coach Lynn Ewald … Co-captain her junior and senior seasons … Concluded her career as the all-time leader at  PFHS in rebounding and blocked shots … Also holds the high school's game and season records in those categories … 2011 All-Dulles First Team honoree … Tabbed as her squad's MVP in 2010 … Was the only player in school history to have posted a triple-double … Also competed on the volleyball and track and field teams.

 Maggie Brown (6-0, Wilmington, MA/Phillips Academy Andover) – Played the final two years as a prep at Phillips Academy Andover … Her final season of action saw her average 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game … Connected on 73 percent of her field goal attempts including 48 percent from three-point range … Captured all-league acclaim her last campaign of action … During 2011-12, she tossed in 13.8 points and snatched 8.8 boards per contest … Played her first two years at Wilmington High School and twice earned Cape Ann League All-Star recognition … New England Hoop Report All-Star … Also played soccer. 


Emory finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 24-4 that included the program's first-ever University Athletic Association championship, finishing the league portion of the schedule with a 12-2 mark.  The Eagles earned their first NCAA D-III Tournament berth since 1997 and advanced to the Round of 16.
