Khadijah Sayyid Tabbed As UAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Khadijah Sayyid Tabbed As UAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Emory University junior Khadijah Sayyid (Longmont, CO) has been selected as the University Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her efforts in helping the Eagles to a 2-1 record.  It is the third time this season and in her career that she has been selected for the award.

The 5-foot-2 Sayyid closed out the week with team-high averages in points (16.0 ppg), rebounds (9.0 rpg) and steals (4.3 spg), pacing the squad in those categories in all three contests.  In addition, she connected on 45.5 percent (20-of-44) of her field goal attempts and converted a keen 53.8 percent from (7-of-13) from beyond the arc.

Sayyid posted her second double-double of the campaign with 20 points and 12 rebounds (her second-highest career total) in a 64-54 decision over Salem (Dec. 29) in an opening-round game of Piedmont College's Cancer Awareness Tournament.  Sayyid was successful on eight of her 15 field opportunities against the Spirits, and accounted for all of the Eagles' three-point field goals, hitting three-of-five from long range.  Against the host Lions, she chalked up 17 points on seven-of-15 shooting from the floor (3-of-6 from three-point distance), and added seven rebounds and a game-high five steals in an 81-69 setback.  She closed out the week with 11 points and game highs in both rebounds (8) and steals (5) in a solid 60-39 win at Guilford (Jan. 2).

Her 11 steals over the three games upped her career total to 130, good for 11th place on the school's all-time list.

Through games played Jan. 5, Sayyid, who has scored in double figures on nine occasions this year, stands No. 3 on the UAA ladder in scoring (16.4 ppg) and No. 4 in rebounding (9.2).  In addition, she is fourth in three-point percentage (.452, 19-of-42) and sixth in steals (2.3 spg).

The Eagles, 8-3 overall, return to action on Saturday (Jan. 10) when they open league play at the University of Rochester.
