Emory Women's Basketball Gearing Up For UAA Opener At Rochester

GAME FACTS – The Emory women's basketball team continues a seven-game road swing on Saturday (Jan. 10) when it begins University Athletic Association action at the University of Rochester. The Louis Alexander Palestra will serve as the site of the 52nd meeting between the Eagles and Yellowjackets and tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

THE COACHES – Emory Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty (Tulane, '96) is in her 12th season in charge of the Eagles.  She assumed her current duties prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign and enters the Rochester game with a school and career mark of 155-134.  Last year, Thomaskutty guided the program to an overall record of 16-9, Emory's third-straight winning season.   Thomaskutty is assisted by Misha Jackson, Kim Coleman and Morgan Crawford. 

Jim Scheible (Clarkson, '88) is in his 16th campaign in charge of the Rochester program and posts a school record of 296-128.  He has guided the Yellowjackets to nine NCAA Tournament berths and has a pair of national semifinal appearances (2003 & 2010) to his credit.  In 24 years as a head coach, Scheible has compiled a career ledger of 437-199.

2014-15 RECORDS – Emory has won its last two and five of its past six encounters, raising its record to 8-3.  In their last outing, the Eagles rolled to an impressive 73-61 triumph at No. 23 Rhodes College on Monday.  Junior Khadijah Sayyid sparked the win over the Lynx with her third double-double of the season, a team-high tying 13-point, career-high tying 15-rebound performance.  Sophomore Michelle Bevan tied Sayyid for team honors with her 13 points establishing a career high.  Freshman Dumebi Egbuna recorded her first double-double of her young career, rounding out the squad's double-figure scorers with 12 points while snagging a season-best 10 rebounds.

Emory is 4-1 at home and 4-2 in road/neutral games this season.

Rochester hosts Emory with an 8-3 mark.  The Yellowjackets have dropped their last two decisions including a 65-63 verdict at Hamilton College on Tuesday. Rochester is 3-1 in home games this season.

SERIES RECORDS – Rochester enjoys a 28-23 edge in the all-time series that saw the first game played in January of 1989.  Each team pocketed a win during the 2013-14 season with Emory notching a 74-43 triumph at home before the Yellowjackets snapped a four-game losing streak to the Eagles with an 82-74 victory in Rochester.   Rochester has been victorious in 16 of the 24 contests played on its home court.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2014-15 Emory women's basketball team are juniors Khadijah Sayyid (Longmont, CO) and Ilene Tsao (Fremont, CA) and sophomore Shellie Kaniut (Vienna, VA).  
 

NOTES –  Sayyid has scored in double figures in four straight and in nine games this season … Sayyid has chalked up four outings of 20 or more points and heads into the weekend No. 3 on the UAA chart in scoring with a 16.4 points-per-game average … Sayyid's five steals against Guilford (Jan. 2)  represented her fifth multi-theft performance of the season and her 2.3 per-game effort in that category is good for the No. 6 position on the league ladder … Sayyid has at least one steal to her name in all 11 contests … Career-wise, Sayyid is deadlocked with Alicia Moore (1994-98) for the No. 10 spot on the program's all-time chart with 131 steals … Michelle Bevan has come through with double-figure scoring in her last three games, averaging 11.7 points and shooting 48.3 percent (15-of-31) from the floor in that stretch … The Eagles connected on a season-high tying 20 free throws and finished with a season-best 74.1 percent mark (20-of-27) from the stripe in the Rhodes game … Emory has 10 or more offensive rebounds in all 11 games and ranks second among league teams with 15.6 boards-per game on that end of the floor … Emory has posted 10 or more steals on eight occasions and stands fourth in the UAA with a 10.6 per-game average … Rhodes College connected on just 26.3 percent of its field goal attempts, the fourth time this year Emory had limited an opponent to less than 30 percent … Emory is 8-0 when outshooting its opposition from the floor, 0-3 when being outshot … The Eagles have outrebounded seven opponents and show a +6.3 per-game advantage in that category … Junior Sarah Arington (Cincinnati, OH)  grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in the Rhodes game … Emory reserves have scored 20 or more points in five games this year … The Eagles finished with a season-high 58 rebounds in the Rhodes contest, tying the program's ninth-highest game total … Ilene Tsao (Fremont, CA) tied her career high with eight rebounds in the Rhodes game … Emory has won 20 of its last 24 and 36 of its last 43 home games … The Eagles have won their last 16 and are 40-4 during Thomaskutty's tenure as head coach when scoring 80 or more points (1-0 in '14-15, 5-0 in 2013-14, and 7-0 in 2012-13) … Emory is averaging 34.0 points in the first half of play and 33.2 points over the final 20 minutes of action … Opponents are averaging 26.7 points in the first half and 30.0 in the second half … Opponents have turned the ball over more than Emory in six games … Emory has attempted more free throws than the opposition on four occasions while opponents have attempted more in six contests (one game is a tie) … Emory has outscored opponents in 16 of 22 halves … Emory is fourth in the UAA with a 31.4 percent mark (58-of-185) from three-point range with Sayyid's 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from beyond the arc leading the team and placing fourth among UAA players … Sayyid is tied for third in the conference in offensive rebounds per game (3.3 orpg) and is overall boards (9.2 rpg).
