Emory Women's Basketball Drops UAA Opener At Rochester

The Emory women's basketball saw a two-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as it came out on the short end of its University Athletic Association opener at the University of Rochester.  The Eagles saw their record slip to 8-4 overall following a 66-42 setback to the Yellowjackets who boosted their mark to 8-4.

Emory fell victim to cold field goal shooting, hitting on just 25.6 percent (20-of-78) from the floor, its second-lowest mark of the season, while Rochester was successful on 42.4 percent (25-of-59).  The Yellowjackets made the most of their three-point shooting attempts, draining 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from distance compared to Emory's 1-of-11 showing.

Junior Ilene Tsao was the lone Eagle to post double-figure scoring , totaling 11 points while also managing to grab a team-best seven rebounds.  Sophomore Michelle Bevan was next up on the team's scoresheet with eight points.   Junior Khadijah Sayyid registered team highs with six assists and five steals, and tied sophomore Patricia Mook as the club's second-high rebounder with six caroms.

Both teams struggled offensively early on with the score knotted at 2-2 6:27 into the contest.  The Eagles saw Rochester get separation as a result of a 15-2 run over a four-minute stretch that gave the Yellowjackets  a 17-4 lead with 9:38 left in the opening stanza.   Freshman Whitney Carmack hit back-to-back baskets to highlight an 8-2 Emory spurt that cut its deficit to seven points, but a 16-2 barrage by UR, which included three three-pointers ballooned the home team's advantage to 35-14 with 1:35 left in the stanza.  Rochester took a 39-20 lead into halftime, hitting 45.5 percent from the field (15-of-33) including seven treys in 14 tries.

Emory freshman Dumebi Egbuna scored the first basket of the second half but that would be as close as the Eagles would get for the remainder of the game as a subsequent 11-2 charge by the Yellowjackets boosted their lead to 26 points, 50-24, with 15:36 left on the clock.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 16) when it plays at No. 4-ranked Washington University.
