Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Brandeis

Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Brandeis

The Emory women's basketball team saw a two-game win streak come to an end Friday evening as it dropped a road game at Brandeis University.  The Eagles saw their overall record slip to 10-7, 2-4 in the University Athletic Association, following a 68-56 setback to the Judges who upped their record to 10-7, 2-4 in the conference.

Sophomore Shellie Kaniut was the lone Emory performer to finish with double-figure scoring, totaling 14 points on five-of-nine shooting from the floor, including three-of-four from three-point range.  It was her fourth consecutive and eighth double-digit outing of the year.  Junior Khadijah Sayyid was next up on the team's scoring list with nine points, while grabbing a team-high six rebounds.

With Brandeis building a 12-point lead at halftime, the teams traded baskets throughout the first eight minutes of the second half.  After a bucket by Sayyid cut BU's margin to 11 points, the Judges extended their advantage to 55-40 with 9:42 left in the contest.  Back-to-back triples by Kaniut and Sayyid highlighted an 8-0 Emory charge that sliced the gap to seven points with 7:30 left, but six unanswered points by the Judges pushed their lead back to 13 points, 61-48, with 6:25 left.  Five straight points from Kaniut kept Emory's hopes alive, but the Judges stymied the Eagles' comeback attempt with a 7-1 run over a three-minute stretch that stretched the home team's lead to 68-54 with 2:10 on the clock.

Brandeis ended the game with a slight edge in field goal shooting, sinking 37.3 percent (22-of-59) of it attempts compared to Emory's mark of 36.1 percent (22-of-61).   While the Eagles sank four treys to BU's one, the Judges recorded a decisive advantage from the foul line, converting 23-of-29 opportunities while Emory tallied eight makes in 14 tries.  Brandeis also finished with a 57-28 bulge in rebounding.  Freshman Olivia Shaw led BU with 16 points while senior Hannah Cain added 12 points.

Behind 10 points from Shaw, the Judges enjoyed a 36-24 lead at halftime.   Brandeis shot 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of action to Emory's 32.3 percent (10-of-31), and outrebounded the Eagles by a 27-14 margin.  Egbuna led Emory's first-half scoring effort, scoring all eight of her points on four-of-seven shooting from the floor.   The Eagles found themselves trailing by an eight-point margin midway through the stanza before responding with an 11-4 spurt, highlighted by a pair of baskets from Egbuna and Sayyid, to narrow their deficit to one point with 5:10 remaining.  However, BU closed out the half by outscoring Emory by a 14-3 margin with Heather Cain, Hannah Cain and Shaw all scoring four points each in that stretch.   The Judges went 6-of-6 from the stripe over the final five minutes and closed out the half converting 11 of their 13 opportunities.

Emory returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 1, when it plays at No. 8-ranked New York University.
