Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Home To UAA Leader Chicago

The Emory women's basketball team closed out a home weekend of University Athletic Association play with a Sunday afternoon loss at home to the University of Chicago.  The Eagles saw their overall record dip to 11-11, 3-8 in the league after dropping a 73-52 decision to the conference-leading Maroons, who captured their 10th straight win while raising their overall record to 16-6 overall (10-1 UAA).

Junior Khadijah Sayyid and freshman Dumebi Egbuna posted double-figure scoring numbers for Emory with Sayyid finishing with 11 points and Egbuna 10.  Egbuna also tied sophomore Michelle Bevan for team honors with six rebounds.  Freshman Mikailia Schmitt and sophomore Shellie Kaniut came off the bench to score eight points apiece.

Chicago concluded the contest hitting 45.6 percent (26-of-57) of its field goal attempts while Emory finished at 27 percent (20-of-74).  Leading the UC scoring attack was Claire Devaney with 14 points.  UC finished with a 47-38 advantage in the rebounding department and was paced in that category by Hannah Ballard's eight boards.  The Eagles did come up with 15 steals, their 13th outing of the campaign with double digits in that category, with Sayyid, Egbuna and Kaniut all registering four thefts.

Emory fell behind by a 17-7 count midway through the first half but rallied to within six points, 19-13, following back-to-back buckets by Schmitt.   Forced to play catch-up the remainder of the stanza, the Eagles got to within eight points with 2:23 left in the stanza before the Maroons eventually took a 35-24 edge at halftime.

Egbuna opened the second half with two quick buckets to narrow Emory's gap to seven points, but UC countered with a 10-0 blitz, which saw Katie Anderson and Ellie Greiner hit three pointers in that stretch, to bolt to a 45-28 advantage.   A basket by Schmitt, followed by a Sayyid four-point play, kept the Eagles within striking distance, down 11 points, but seven unanswered Chicago points boosted its advantage to 18 points with 13:50 left on the clock.

The Eagles return to action on Friday (Feb. 20) when they play at Case Western Reserve.
