Emory Women's Basketball Drops Road Decision At No. 13 Carnegie Mellon

The Emory women's basketball team saw a two-game win streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as it came out on the short end of a road game at Carnegie Mellon University.  The Eagles saw their record dip to 11-5, 2-3 in the University Athletic Association following a 93-73 setback to the No. 13-ranked Tartans who raised their overall slate to 15-1, 4-1 in conference action.

CMU senior Lisa Murphy was the story of the game as she totaled 44 points, sinking 15-of-16 field goal attempts and 14 of her 16 free throw opportunities.  Senior Jackie Hudepohl added 17 points for the Tartans, converting six of her nine field goal attempts including a pair of three pointers.

Senior Shellie Kaniut led the Emory scoring effort with 17 points, her 12th double-figure scoring effort of the year, hitting eight-of-18 from the floor.  Kaniut totaled 13 second-half points, converting six field goals in 10 tries.  Freshman Erin Lindahl registered a dozen points, her third double-digit outing of the campaign, sinking five-of-11 from the floor.  Rounding out the team's double-figure scorers were sophomores Ashley Oldshue and Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Senior Michelle Bevan topped the club with seven rebounds.

After trailing by a 20-17 margin after the first quarter, the Eagles used back-to-back buckets by Oldshue and Lindahl to knot the score at 26-26 with 5:43 left in the second stanza.  However, the Tartans went on a 12-2 spurt, with Murphy scoring seven points, to claim a 38-28 edge with 2:37 remaining.  Emory moved to within nine points after a Kaniut layup, but CMU scored the final six points of the quarter over a 55-second stretch to take a 49-34 edge into halftime.   Oldshue, Jackson-Sherrod and senior Fran Sweeney all scored six points to lead Emory.  Murphy led all players with 20 first-half points.

An 11-3 Tartan run to open the third quarter stretched their lead to 60-38.  The Eagles battled back with Kaniut scoring 11 points over a six-minute stretch to creep to within 13 points with 1:08 on the clock, but a bucket by Murphy gave the hosts a 75-59 edge heading into the fourth stanza.  Emory kept CMU in its sights, opening the final 10 minutes on a 9-3 sprint, capped by a Bevan basket, to narrow its deficit to 10 points, 78-68, with 6:20 remaining, but CMU scored eight on the game's next nine points, with Murphy tallying six points, to push ahead by an 86-69 count with 3:55 on the clock.

Emory shot 47.7 percent (31 of 65) from the floor while CMU was successful on 56.9 percent (33 of 58).  The Eagles hit just four-of-18 three-point field goal attempts while the Tartans sank 42.9 percent (6 of 14).  CMU held a 39-26 margin in rebounding.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 27) when it hosts Brandeis University in a 6:00 pm tip.
