Emory Women's Basketball Rolls To Senior Day Win vs. Rochester

Senior Shellie Kaniut and sophomore Ashley Oldshue combined for 37 points and the Emory women's basketball team closed out its season on a successful note with a Saturday afternoon home win over Rochester.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 15-10, 6-8 in the University Athletic Association following an impressive 73-57 verdict over the Yellowjackets who slipped to 17-8 in overall action, 9-5 in the conference.  Prior to the start of today's game, Senior Day was held, recognizing the contributions of Michelle Bevan, Shellie Kaniut, Fran Sweeney and head manager Jasmyn Mackell.

Kaniut connected on 10-of-17 field goal attempts en route to her 18th double-figure scoring performance of the season and sixth of 20 or more points.  Kaniut closed out her career with 946 points, good for 10th place on the program's all-time chart.  Kaniut also contributed seven rebounds and collected three of the team's nine steals.  Oldshue, who tallied 17 points, was successful on 7-of-13 field goal opportunities and all three of her free throw tries in posting her 22nd consecutive and 24th double-digit effort of the season.  Bevan chipped in nine points and totaled a game-high tying nine rebounds while Sweeney tallied eight points.

Holding a two-point lead at halftime, Emory used a strong second half in winning for the ninth time in 11 outings at the Woodruff PE Center, outpointing the Yellowjackets by a 44-30 margin over the final two quarters of action.  Oldshue scored 15 points over the final two stanzas while Kaniut added 10 points. The Eagles shot 55.9 percent (19 of 34) from the floor over the final 20 minutes while UR was able to convert on just 31.3 percent (10 of 32).

An 8-0 run, which saw Kaniut score four points and Sweeney and Bevan two apiece, stretched a two-point Emory lead to a 47-37 advantage with 1:21 left in the third quarter.  Ahead by eight points at the start of the final 10 minutes of action, back-to-back buckets by Oldshue boosted Emory to a 51-39 margin with 8:49 on the clock.  A pair of free throws by UR's Alexandra Leslie, who finished with a game-high 23 points, drew the Yellowjackets to within nine points, but Emory sealed the outcome with six unanswered points, started with a layup by freshman Lindsey Tse and followed by a pair of baskets by Oldshue, to take an insurmountable 15-point bulge, 66-51, with 3:19 on the clock.

For the game, Emory shot 49.2 percent (31 of 63) from the floor compared to UR's 33.3 percent (21 of 63).  The Eagles converted two three-point field goals in six attempts while Rochester struggled from distance, sinking just three of its 18 tries.  Emory held a 40-33 advantage in rebounding.
