Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Oglethorpe

Emory Women's Basketball Falls At Oglethorpe

The Emory University women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a Tuesday evening setback at Oglethorpe University.  The Eagles saw their overall record dip to 6-5 following a 75-60 defeat to the Stormy Petrels who upped their ledger to 8-4.

Junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod paced the Emory scoring attack with 15 points,  her fifth straight and ninth double-figure scoring effort of the campaign, hitting seven-of-12 field goal attempts and one charity toss in two tries.  Jackson-Sherrod also topped the squad's rebounding efforts with a season-high tying nine boards. Sophomore Erin Lindahl was the other Eagle to post double digits in scoring notching 14 points.

A tough third quarter proved too much for Emory to overcome as Oglethorpe registered a 17-4 scoring edge that stretched a two-point halftime lead into a 58-43 bulge heading into the final 10 minutes of action.  The Eagles were only able to convert one-of-17 field goal attempts in the third stanza with a three-pointer by sophomore Hazel Carmona the lone shot hit from the floor.

Facing a 16-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, Emory drew to within a dozen following a 6-2 spurt that saw Jackson-Sherrod score four points.  The Eagles continued to chip away and got to within nine points on two occasions, the final time coming with 3:17 on the clock following a bucket by junior Ashley Oldshue.  However, Oglethorpe held off the Emory comeback bid to come away with the victory.

Oglethorpe finished with a 36.2 percent (25-69) mark from the floor compared to Emory's 35.6 percent (21-59). Neither team shot well from beyond the arc with Emory sinking two-of-16 from distance and the Petrels one-of-nine.  Oglethorpe did enjoy a decided 50-33 in the rebounding department.

In a closely played first half, Oglethorpe used a 7-2 spurt over the final 1:14 of the second quarter to claim a 41-39 edge heading into the half.  Emory connected on 46.4 percent (13-28) of its field goal attempts while the Petrels were successful on 40 percent (16-40) of their floor opportunities. The Eagles drained 12 free throws in 18 attempts while Oglethorpe sank eight-of-10 from the stripe.  Lindahl paced the Emory scoring effort over the first two quarters with 12 points, sinking five-of-eight from the floor, including one triple in two attempts.  Sophomore Lindsey Tse and Jackson-Sherrod each chipped in eight points.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 6) when it opens University Athletic Association action by hosting Rochester in a 2:00 pm start.
