Emory Women's Basketball Edged At No. 16 Chicago

Junior Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and sophomore Erin Lindahl combined for 29 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team came out on the short end of a Friday evening road game at Chicago.  The No. 16-ranked Maroons won for the 15th straight time and upped their overall record to 17-2, 8-0 in the University Athletic Association following a 72-63 decision over the Eagles who slipped to 10-9 overall, 4-4 in the league.

Jackson-Sherrod topped the Emory attack with 16 points, sinking six-of-10 field goal attempts and four-of-seven from the charity stripe in registering her 15th double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Lindahl contributed 13 points to the cause while sophomore guard Lindsey Tse rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 10 points.

After a layup by UC's Olariche Obi gave Chicago 47-36 edge with 4:30 left in the third quarter, the Eagles closed out the frame on a 12-4 tear, sparked by seven points from sophomore Allison Chernow, to draw to with three points heading into the final 10 minutes of action.  Chicago built its lead back to seven points with 8:35 on the clock following a three-point play by Marissa Igunbor, but Emory stayed in the hunt with a pair of free throws by Ashley Oldshue followed by a three-point play from Jackson-Sherrod to narrow the deficit to 57-55 with 6:55 remaining.  A three-pointer by UC's Elizabeth Nye, her only basket in five tries on the night, boosted the home squad to a 62-55 margin, but a basket by Tse cut the Maroons' lead to five points.   Trailing by a 68-59 count, Emory mounted one last comeback bid, using a pair of charity tosses by Jackson-Sherrod and a basket by Lindahl to creep to within five points at 68-63 with 1:51 on the clock.  However, the Eagles went scoreless down the stretch while the Maroons scored their last four points at the line to secure the win.

Emory concluded the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor while holding UC to 32.8 percent (21-64).  The Maroons held a decided edge at the foul line, converting 73.7 percent (28-38) compared the Eagles' 64.3 percent (9-14).  Chicago posted a 43-32 advantage in rebounding, 20-8 on the offensive end of the floor that helped it to a 15-6 edge in second-chance points.

Emory got off to a good start and enjoyed a 14-8 advantage with 3:30 left in the opening stanza after a bucket by Jackson-Sherrrod.  However, the Maroons closed out the final 3:04 of the frame on a 10-0 run to take a four-point edge.  After seeing UC hit the first bucket in the second quarter, the Eagles countered with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a three-pointer by Lindahl, to cut their gap to one point.  Emory did take a 29-28 lead after a drive to the rim by Lindahl, but the hosts accounted for the final eight points over the final 2:38 of the quarter to capture a 36-29 edge heading into the break. Jackson-Sherrod and Tse scored eight points apiece to lead the Emory scoring attack while Lindahl tallied seven points.  The Eagles shot 46.7 percent (14-30) from the floor compared to the Marrons' 34.3 percent (12-35). UC made up for the deficit in field goal shooting by canning 12-of-17 free throws while the Eagles misfired on all three of their opportunities.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 4) when it plays at Washington University in a 2:00 pm (EST) tip.
