Women's Basketball's Defense Clamps Down in 79-48 Win Over CWRU

Women's Basketball's Defense Clamps Down in 79-48 Win Over CWRU

The Emory University women's basketball team romped through the Case Western Reserve Spartans on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, OH defeating them 79-48.

The Eagles moved above .500 in conference play for the first time in the month of February as their record moves to 6-5 against UAA opponents and 15-6 overall. The Spartans conference record moves to 5-6 with the loss to the Eagles.

Sophomore Daniella Aronsky led the Eagles in scoring for the fourth time in the conference slate as she registered 19 points while knocking down three triples as she continued to improve her nation leading three-point percentage (49.1%). Senior Claire Brock had an efficient day from the floor as she went 6-for-10 from the floor for a total of 13 points while also pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Senior Mariane Auza recorded her 14th game multi-steal game of the season as she had three rips while recording seven points of her own. Evie Miller led all Spartans in scoring with ten points as she was the only player to crack double figures.

The Eagles were incredibly efficient all day going 31-for-54 (57.4%) from the floor while their defensive pressure was suffocating as they held the Spartans to 27.1% shooting on the day. Emory dominated in the paint as they out scored Case Western Reserve 36-22 while also winning the rebounding battle by a margin of two.

The Eagles surrendered the first three points of the game and it would mark the only time they would trail for the duration of the game. Emory's first major blow of the game was struck in the middle of the first period as the Eagles pieced together an eight to nothing scoring run to take a 15-5 lead. The Eagles continued to stretch out their lead, opening the second quarter on a 10-3 scoring run highlighted by four points from sophomore Morgan Laudick. Emory would lead by as much as 21 in the second quarter before ending the period up 41-22.

The Spartans cut the Eagles lead down to 16 to begin the third quarter but that would be the closest they would get for the remainder of the game. The Eagles offense was surgical for the entire second half of the game as they blew the game open up to the tune of a 38-point lead with the game closing at a score of 79-48 in Emory's favor.

The Eagles will play their final two home games of the regular season next weekend as they are set to take on No. 6 ranked NYU on Friday at 5:30 PM before playing Brandeis at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
