Women’s Basketball Defeats Carnegie Mellon 62-52, Remains Undefeated at Home

The Emory University women's basketball team saw its fourth conference win on Sunday afternoon after taking down the Carnegie Mellon Tartans 62-52 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles pick up their 14th win of the season and now stand 4-1 in conference play. Emory was led by graduate student Claire Brock who totaled 26 points on the day with six three pointers out of 13 attempts to tie her career high. Sophomore Chloe Kreusser and junior Erin Martin both posted seven rebounds for the Eagles, Kreusser with five offensive.

The first quarter got off to a slow start for Emory going scoreless until the 7:14 mark. Back to back jumpers from Brock and a layup from Kreusser gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. The Tartans tied the game at six but Brock answered with back to back threes to give Emory a 14-6 advantage. After a layup from Martin with 2:15 on the clock, the Eagles went scoreless for the remainder of the quarter holding onto a 20-12 lead going into the second.

Brock started the second quarter with her third three of the game followed by a free throw from freshman Alexandra Loucopoulos giving the Eagles a nine-point lead with 6:42 left in the half. The Tartans looked to close the gap towards the end of the quarter but five more points from Loucopoulos helped the Eagles to a 33-31 lead heading into the locker room.

Once again, Brock started the second half with a three pointer right out of the gate with senior Izzy Munson making a jumper to give Emory a five-point advantage. Emory later extended their lead to 42-34 with 4:50 remaining in the quarter before junior Daniella Aronsky landed her first three of the day to broaden the lead. After a late layup from Carnegie Mellon, the Eagles held onto a 48-42 lead going into the final quarter of the game.

The Tartans opened the fourth quarter with a 6-5 run but Emory still held a 53-48 lead with just over six minutes on the clock. Just under a minute later, Aronsky sank her second three of the day giving the Eagles a 10-point 58-48 lead. Both teams scored four more points in the last five minutes and Emory held out for the 62-52 victory.

The Eagles outshot the Tartans in all categories except free throws. Emory was able to shoot 9-25 from beyond the arc for 36.0 percent compared to the Tartan's 2-17 (11.8%). The Eagles were also effective from the field shooting 44.1 percent compared to Carnegie Mellon's 42.1 percent.

The Eagles will take the week off before traveling north to face the Brandeis Judges on Friday, January 26 at 5:30 PM and the No. 1 ranked NYU Violets on Sunday, January 28 at 2:00 PM.
