Women’s Basketball Drops Sunday Matchup to NYU, 82-46

The Emory University women's basketball team lost its fourth game of the season falling to the No. 1 ranked NYU Violets on Sunday afternoon 82-44.

The team falls to 16-4 on the season and holds a 6-3 record in UAA play. Sophomore Katherine Martini led the team with nine points against the Violets and totaled two assists on the day while junior Morgan Laudick followed with eight points of her own. Graduate student Claire Brock totaled seven points on the day and posted four rebounds and four assists. 

The Violets got off to a hot start in the first quarter going on a 10-0 run in the first five minutes. Junior Erin Martin got the scoring started for the Eagles making a layup with 4:47 on the clock but NYU continued their impressive shooting going on an 11-0 run in the final four minutes of the quarter. 

Emory was able to outscore the Violets in the second quarter going 17-13 before the half. Martini came out of the gate strong in the second making a layup before being fouled for a free throw bringing the score to 21-5. Senior Izzy Munson and junior Daniella Aronsky followed with four more points but the Violets matched each throw with the Eagles. Following NYU's 32nd point, the game was scoreless for two minutes before a jumper from freshman Emma Starr broke the streak. Laudick ended the half for the Eagles with a layup and NYU took a 34-19 lead into the locker room.

NYU came out swinging in the third quarter scoring 28 points compared to Emory's 18. A three pointer from Munson and a layup from Martin cut the Violets' lead to 20 points but NYU answered with a few more points of their own. After another layup from Laudick at the 5:40 mark, the Violets went on a 12-7 run in the final five minutes of the quarter holding onto a 62-37 lead.

The Eagles were scoreless for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter until Brock scored her first points of the game with a three pointer for Emory's 40th point. Brock made seven of Emory's nine points in the fourth quarter and was helped by free throws from Starr. NYU was unstoppable as they took the game 82-46.

Emory will return to the WoodPec on Friday, February 9 at 5:30 PM to face the WashU Bears before playing host to the Chicago Maroons on Sunday, February 11 at 2:00 PM.
