Aronsky Posts Double-Double in 72-54 Win over Carnegie Mellon

The Emory University women's basketball team completed the undefeated weekend with its 72-54 win against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

The Eagles pick up their 19th win of the season and improve to 9-4 in the UAA. Junior Daniella Aronsky finished her weekend with a bang scoring 12 points on the day and notching 13 assists for the double-double. Fellow junior Morgan Laudick led the way for the Eagles with 19 points, the third best of her career, and posted eight rebounds. Sophomore Lily Kennedy entered the game off the bench going for 11 points and eight rebounds, her career high.

The first two minutes of the game saw both teams going toe to toe with Laudick scoring four points to tie the game at four with 8:03 on the clock. The Eagles continued to play catchup with the Tartans before a three pointer from Allie Heyer gave CMU an 11-8 lead with 4:29 remaining in the quarter. Junior Erin Martin landed a jumper to bring the score to 11-10 before Kennedy sank a three pointer to give Emory a 13-11 lead, their first lead of the day. Kennedy made a layup before a three pointer from the Tartans brought the score to 15-14, Emory advantage heading into the second quarter.

Aronsky opened the second quarter with a three pointer in the first 20 seconds of the quarter to widen the Eagles' lead but the Tartans followed with a layup of their own to keep the game within two before tying the game at 18 with 7:23 on the clock.

The game was tied two more times in the next two minutes before CMU took the lead 24-22 at the 4:17 mark. Kennedy responded with a three pointer to give Emory a 25-24 advantage with just over four minutes left in the half. The game was held scoreless for the next three minutes with Aronsky landing a three at the 1:05 mark followed by a jumper from sophomore Chloe Kreusser helping Emory to a 30-24 lead heading into the locker room.

The Tartans started the second half strong scoring four points in the first two minutes and holding Emory scoreless until a three pointer from graduate student Claire Brock with 7:10 on the clock. CMU came within three points of the Eagles but Aronsky responded with yet another three forcing a timeout from the Tartans. Another three from Aronsky and a jumper from Laudick forced another timeout from CMU with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. The Tartans went on a 6-2 run in the next two minutes before eight points from Laudick and Kennedy ended the third quarter giving the Eagles a 51-38 lead.

The Eagles were held scoreless in the fourth quarter until the 8:09 mark with Laudick sinking a jumper to give Emory a 12-point advantage. The two teams went back and forth for the next minute before senior Izzy Munson landed a three pointer helping the Eagles to a 58-44 lead. Emory was scoreless again forcing a timeout from the bench with 4:44 remaining in the game and Kreusser came out of the break strong scoring eight points of her own to give Emory a 69-50 lead with just over two minutes in the game. The Tartans scored four points in the final two minutes but freshman Alexandra Loucopoulos ended the game for the Eagles with a three securing the 72-54 win.

The Eagles shot just 33.3 percent from beyond the arc but outshot the Tartans from the field shooting 42.3 percent compared to CMU's 37.7 percent.

Emory will return to Atlanta, Georgia for the final regular season matchup of the season where they will face the Rochester Yellowjackets at 5:30 PM at the WoodPec.
