Women's Golf Extends NCAA Lead Following Record-Setting Third Round

The Emory University women's golf team continued their record-setting pace, surpassing the NCAA Division III Championship single round record for the second time in three days.

The No. 1 ranked Eagles broke the NCAA record at the championships for best single round score with a day three score of 291 following an outstanding performance on the front nine, besting the previous mark of 292 that was set by the team on Tuesday. The Eagles, looking to win their first national championship in their three-year program history, will carry a 24-stroke lead into tomorrow's fourth and final round of competition and have totaled a tremendous three-day total of 879 (292-296-291). Emory leads the field with the most birdies (40) and most eagles (3) as they continue to shatter records at this year's championships. No. 5 ranked Redlands is in second place with a three-round total of 903 (304-306-293) while No. 4 ranked George Fox rounds out the podium posting a 54-hole total of 906 (305-304-297). At the conclusion of the third round the field was cut to the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on one of those teams as they head into the final round of championship play.

Freshman Ellen Dong is in the lead for the individual title by three strokes after carding a 72 in the third round today and bringing her three-round total to a one-under 215 (75-68-72). Dong broke the single round record by an individual with her four-under 68 in the second round and she leads the field in scoring on par-5 holes (-7). Freshman Sharon Mun recorded a one-over 73 in the third round to bring her 54-hole total to 219 (73-73-73) which sees her tied for sixth. Freshman Heejo Hyun is third on the team in scoring with a 224 (72-76-76) and is tied for 17th in the field of 151 remaining golfers. Sophomore Irene Wang goes into the final round tied for 20th with a three-day score of 225 (72-79-74). Sophomore Mariana Chong had the highlight of the day, sinking the first a hole-in-one of this year's NCAA Championship on the eighth hole that helped her to tie the team-high in the third round with a 72 that brought her total to 230 (79-79-72).

The Eagles look to clinch their first-ever national title as they open the final round of play Friday morning at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, TX.
