Women's Golf Takes Second at MCC Intercollegiate

The MCC Intercollegiate came down to the final hole Monday afternoon with Carnegie Mellon University besting the Emory University women's golf team by a single stroke at the Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, Alabama.

CMU finished the tournament with a two-day total of 580 following team scores of 290 each round. For the Eagles, they were one shot better than Sunday with a round two score of 290 for a two-round total of 581. Both UAA programs were well ahead of Washington & Lee University that finished third at 593 and Mary Hardin-Baylor that placed fourth at 604.

Emory and Carnegie Mellon were dead even on the scorecard with the Tartans' Samantha Wang and freshman Derica Chiu heading into the final hole. Wang birdied the par-5 18th hole while Chiu shot par, giving the Tartans the tournament win. Wang was crowned the individual champion with a six-under 138 whereas Chiu took third with a two-under 142.

Chiu was one of two Eagles inside the top-three as junior Heejo Hyun concluded her stellar tournament with a day two score of 69 to finish second individually at 140. Classmate Sharon Mun carded a 73 on Monday to finish in sole possession of 11th at 148 (75-73). Fellow junior Ellen Dong shaved five strokes off her game from Sunday as she ended in a tie for 22nd at 153 (79-74) while freshman Esther Jung shot a 77 for the second straight day to tie for 26th place.

The Eagles will continue their fall slate next weekend with the NCAA Fall National Preview on October 1-2. Play will take place at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
