Women's Golf Stands Second After First Day of Golfweek October Classic

The No. 3 ranked Emory University women's golf team opened the highly competitive Golfweek October Classic Sunday afternoon, ending the day second amongst the 24-team field.

The Eagles were within the first to tee off on Sunday, posting a first round score of 302. Pomona-Pitzer shot a blistering 286 to pace the field and will start Monday with a 16-stroke lead.

Junior Heejo Hyun continued her strong fall as she topped Emory performers in the first round. Hyun turned in three birdies and 10 pars to card day one total of 74. She'll enter Monday tied for 8th individually.

Freshmen Derica Chiu and Esther Jung returned to the clubhouse with identical scores of 75 and stand in a tie for 15th place on the player leaderboard. Jung matched Hyun for the team lead in birdies while Chiu recorded a team-best 11 pars.

Juniors Ellen Dong and Sharon Mun rounded out the Emory competitors in Sandestin, Florida as Dong shot 78 over her first 18 holes whereas Mun finished two strokes back. Going into round two Dong sits in a tie for 41st individually while Mun is tied for 65th.

The Golfweek October Classic continues with the second round on Monday at the Baytowne Golf Club.
